Sportive Feedstops what do you expect

    We have added an extra long route to the Westernlakes Polka Dot 09 and so would like to know what people expect in their feedstops.
    Last 2 years the long route was 120km and we had 2 water stops at 40km / 80km.Then at 60km we had Soup/Sandwiches and Fruit and Energy bars.
    So with the Polka Dot Fada being 180km the main feed will be at 90km.What would you want or expect at 40 and 130km if you were riding it.These would have to be roadside stops as there is no building/facility to use at these distances.

    Theres also Hot food at the finish

    At the comeragh copper coast over the weekend the lead car for each group had all the goodies on bord and it worked realy well. I busted a gut to get to the feed stop as I had had to take a natural break and thought the 100 km guys would have scoffed the lot. Turned out I was wrong and ended up with an uncofortably full feeling for the next 10 k as I had gorged myself on cakes and fig rolls:D

    Seriously what they had was really good, fruit cake and buns from Lidil sambos to beat the band and a couple of 24 can trays of coke.
    For your own info in a place I was b4, we hit up the local bottled water company who were only too happy to be assosiated with our event.Also try the local supervalues and centras if any are on the route as they could offer somthing to you.

    It may be a personal thing, but towards the end of a long ride I'm always sick of sweet food and want something savoury/salty - crackers, crisps, ham sandwiches, anything really apart from more fig rolls and bananas. That said, most people seem happy enough to keep eating sugar so maybe I'm in a minority.

    On sun the feed stop had loads of 1ltr bottles of water and a bag with a sambo,bananna and a pack of wine gums.I thought it was a great idea.
    Anywhere "in between stops" I reckon just wtaer and maybe some emergency fig rolls/Jaffa's etc. Light stuff












    unless there is a McD's the route.Salty food to replenish the lost salt.

    Ill have no prob getting supplies, people here are very good and always support us. Have found myself that I get sick of the sweet things and just said I'd throw it out there.It will make life easier if I have a good list b4 I start

    After the Ballycotton 10 they had tea + sambos in the community centre (1980's style) and it was the best thing ever!

    The ladies who were doing the work were flat out; (much respect), everyone headed there for a feed.
    Great way to finish the afternoon and perfect feeding:D

    A few sandwiches are nice sometimes, but to be honest I'd tend to rate sportives on the route rather than the grub.

    Mario we have a route that offers you as good a tour as we can give you of South Mayo/Galways Joyce Country.Just want to make sure you have enough energy to enoy it to the full:D

    Hi, I have only done 2 sportives (Ring of Kerry and Sean Kelly).
    Food at both was good - lots of sambos.
    ON Ring of Kerry they are wway too generour, especially with cakes, chocolate etc.

    You need a good balance: Soe cake/scones etc and something savoury (salty, but not too salty).

    What I would love to see at sportives would be fruit and nuts (But fruit other than bananas) - think apples, pears, peaches etc.

    Also, I know that on Ring of Kerry a lot of the food is donated, so ask your local shops to support you.

    +1 Sandwiches. I also get sick of the bars etc. (nice to have replacements available at the same time.)

    I think this one is hilly (right?) and only 20km shorter than the Wicklow 200? Last year there were two food stops with sandwiches and a few sources of lighter stuff (bars etc.) Mick Byrne had two IIRC also... Sean Kelly two, although I only stopped at the first one. ROK is a flat 180km and they had two food stops, both with sandwiches. Also some additional stuff from backs of cars etc.

    Thinking about it maybe a 180km route would be better served with just two full stops at around 60 and 120? Understand if this isn't possible mind.

    Apart from the sandwiches I would suggest traditional snacks, e.g. flapjacks, fruitcake, bananas, fig rolls if you can get them donated, much cheaper than energy bars and preferable to my mind.

    Energy related products can be frightfully expensive, when the avg cyclist can get a similar amount of energy from other more 'normal' food sources.

    BTW - to the original poster. Thanks for asking. Not a lot of folks ask people what they want/think anymore. Appreciated.

    Finally - small sachets of salt, so that folks can add to water bottles.

    I am a Sportive Rider 1st and organiser 2nd.Want to build this up to Connaughts must do event so you are all potential customers:D
    Learnt the salt lesson while helping at a half marathon a few years ago.Girl is now a regular cyclist so we not forget

    Yup, SK had the best food for me. Lots of lucozade sport, bananas and bars during and some tea and sandwiches afterwards.
