Surface Scan Test Failed. What to do next?

Its a Sony VAIO laptop bought in November 2008. All of a sudden it failed to get past the log in part of the start up process. After running Hardware diagnostics it has come back that the Surface Scan test failed. Now here is my dilemma.

Sony will collect laptop today and try to repair it. However its 160euro if it turns out to be NOT hardware related i.e. software problem instead. I have gone to my local computer repair shop and they charge 90euro to repair laptops. I am reluctant to give it to my the local computer shop and pay 90 euros as I only have the computer a few months and think it should be covered by the warranty. However I cant afford it not to be covered, as the 160euro is alot of money for me.

I need the laptop asap and so I am under pressure. Sony are due to collect the laptop today sometime. What should I do?

Take the risk that it will be covered by warranty or play the safer route of cancelling Sony and getting my local computer repair shop to do it???

Help please I am really confused!

Surface errors suggests your hard-drive has physical damage.

If that's covered by warranty, let Sony fix it. Be aware that they'll probably just bung a new drive in there and bin your old one. I doubt their warranty covers any sort of data recovery, so all your data will be lost. So if possible, request your old drive be shipped back to you also, so that you can attempt to recover the data yourself (if you want to).

Thanks voodoo_child for that. Sony have just collected it two minutes ago.

Really worried I am going to be told its not covered by warranty, but I honestly cant recall any possible physical damage it could have got. From past experience with mobile phone company repairs, they try everything to get out of the warranty. Its crazy if I am forced to pay 160euro for them to look at it and be told its my fault.

Anybody else have any similar experience with Sony or any other similar warranty?
