    Hi All
My old laptop is acting up again.
    I'm running XP SP3
Basically the whole thing has slowed down to a crawl and that wouldn't be too bad as I could just do a fresh install BUT! the cd-drive has stopped working so I have no way to reinstall XP from the disc.
Also, system restore has disappeared :(
Its an old machine (Fujitsu Siemens L) but its all I have for the mo

    Any ideas?

    HB

    Hi Again
Well I removed the cd drive and replaced it with an identical one from my GF's old computer. Now the laptop is running like new BUT!!!! the cd drive is not showing up in windows or anywhere else. It does spin up when you put a cd in it but thats it. It's not in Device Manager and when I scan for hardware changes it detects nothing.....

    Any ideas guys????

Boot into safe mode and remove CD Drive in device manager. Then install the new one and see if it picks it up.

try starting laptop with a bootable disc. (windows or linux would do)

that will show if its a hardware issue (dvd driver, motheboard) or software

sorry, I thought you said you replaced it and it was working, usually they are plug and play, try cleaning the connection pins or checking if any of them are damaged.

you could just buy a usb external cdrive on adverts.ie ,20euro.go to bios, set boot mode, priority, usb o, 1st, hd boot 1.2nd.if you wanna install from cd drive.if the bios has a boot usb option.

If its an older laptop then the drive may not be hot plugable.

Shut the machine down ( not standby ) and install the other working drive. Boot up and go into device manager look for any devices with a yellow ! mark these are not correctly picked up hardware. The machine may have a custom cd driver look for any driver directories on the hard disk and reinstall from there.

Also if system restore has dissapeared you may have a virus problem and this may also be part of the cd issue. As you can still boot into xp try running a different antivirus from a usb stick - loads of free one out there.
Try and get your hands on a copy of ERD commander this is a bootable CD that allows you to restore from the hard drive without booting from it.
    Hope some of this helps.
