I'm afraid it's not entirely economics related, but I don't know where else to post it.

I'm a total noob when it comes to banking and savings accounts. I have a bank account with a few grand in it, it's a cash card, I can just use it to withdraw money.

I'm interested in getting a card that allows me to buy stuff off the interwebs, book flights, and so on.

So, can I simply apply for a mastercard, transfer my balance over, and use the mastercard?

    What exactly is the difference?

To me they're just lumps of plastics that I stick in a wall, and woo, magically money comes out - yes, I'm clueless.

    Thanks biggrin.gif

The difference is the mastercard is a credit card which gives you access to a limited amount of credit which you pay back at the end of the month, whereas your bank card takes money directly out of your savings. You can set it up so that any money you use from your credit account is paid off entirely each month by transferring money from your regular bank account. The way the banks make money from this is that should you not pay off the balance on your credit card, they can charge you interest.
