Prescribed the wrong medication

I was prescribed the wrong medication and was given steroids instead of hormone tablets - it was only noticed to be a mistake because I was very concerned about gaining alot of weight in a short amount of time, I was taking them for a month at this stage and suffering numerous very unpleasant side effects such as panic attacks, joint pain and restlessness. I am off them now and have to start working off the excess weight plus trying to deal with the side effects, get councelling and control the pain. What action do you think I should take? My family are saying I should speak to someone about taking legal action but I don't know. And does anyone know do steroids cause long term damage to your body of any kind? Help!
