Ok, I bought a '85 Porsche 2.5ltr as a project car, few bits to do still... What exactly do I have to do about the vrt and all that? I tried it on the web site but it doesnt give you the option for a 944. How much should I expect to pay for this?

You can try ringing them or emailing them for a VRT quote. My local VRT office replied to an email after about 3 working days.

    +1

I tried to ring them once for about an hour, but couldn't get through. I've send them 2 emails and I got a reply to the first one in about 2 weeks and I never got a reply to the other one, even though I sent a reminder too. If you've already imported the car, the easiest is just to show up with the car and sufficient cash in your pocket. For the phone numbers, addresses etc. of all VRO offices, please click the link in the charter of the main motors forum.

hold that thought - will have that in a mo, hopefully :D

ok, as close as I can get: an 85 944 Turbo, (damaged), last year cost Eur 1800 in VRT. Adjust yours, to suit.

Tbh, it'd have been cheaper to buy, here. (ditto my 968's, actually....VRT on my 143k mile one, last year, Eur 3800..... :( )

correct......anything with the P-word on the front is getting lobbed into the 'classic and collectible' catch-all, so that's a licence to go, well, nuts......

OP - how much did you spend on it...?......:o

Let's see - VRT at 30% of the market value...

    That'll be €1,650. :pac:

    36% on a minimum value of €2000.

    So €720 absolute minimum.

you have to take it to the VRT office at the Customs....I find my local office n Cork very helpful ,I wont have a word said against them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 729 ✭✭✭oflynno

ya you have to take it to a customs revenue centre and they will give you a form to fill out, they will inspect the car to check it is what you say it is and check the chassis/vin number

give you a ticket to wait a bit and then take you in and fill out a few bits, give you a registration cert and the number for the car,pay over the vrt fee(waahh),job oxo

you then go to tax office and tax the car and get your new plates

You might find they won't VRT it on the day, if it's a classic - they have to send off a fax (!) to Rosslare for a valuation, based on their inspection, first.......

I reckon they'll back date it to the original date of import even if you do wait until next September

Great cars, I'd love a series 1 gold 944 with the brown interior
The one in Autotrade Centre in little island, Cork to be exact (if it hadn't been parked up outdoors for the last two years)

well they will if the guy tells the truth about the date of import or if they have records of it coming off the ferry perhaps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,042 ✭✭✭Grimreaper666

Jaysus that VRT is a total rip-off, it was bad enough before but now it's gone so bad it just takes the good out of importing a car at all. Considering it's an illegal tax according to the EU who are happy to fine the Irish government for implementing it we're getting screwed from every angle. Motoring in this country is so expensive now it's surprises me how people are so happy to put up with it really.

Well, in the meantime, what's your Alternative? Not drive? What do you suggest regarding "putting up" with it?

    Start an anti-VRT lobby group...........

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

Thats a good idea, now what will we pay extra tax on to make up for it do you think? petrol? food? clothing?entertainment? ..or maybe lets close a few hospitals and schools instead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,042 ✭✭✭Grimreaper666

So your happy enough to get screwed with unrealistic taxes so? If they were fair in the first place i wouldn't mind so much but to set limits where there's a minimum tax to be paid and a ludicrous road tax on top of it beggars belief in my book anyway but shur if ye'r happy enough to pay it the best of luck with it.

whatever they call it, we still have to pay..do you really think you'd end up paying less in total if they scrapped VRT?

Yep. You'd have to start paying a realistic annual property tax like the rest of the world.

Anyway, before the big gust that took this thread off course, where were we???

    ^^ I like it a lot!

Another 2 years for my 924. I'd say we'll start seeing a bunch of 924/944's coming out of the woodwork over the next few years.
