We are a launching a sports based website in the next few weeks and we were looking for any advice people might have on approaching sponsors or companies that would be interested in
advertising on the website. Is it just a matter of emailing / calling relevant companies or is there a better approach? Any advice would be great.

you could talk to media buyers like mindshare. But it's a tough post at the moment. Advertising has gone cheap.

There's a few places that manage online advertising space.

You should aim to launch and to get your traffic high before looking for sponsors. So that you can go to them with exact facts, eg. x amount of people will see your ad everyday

Personally I dont think in todays climate that you have a hope of getting many advertisers on board for a brand new website - As fiscalstudent said, get the site up live and then with a decent amount of traffic and high google ranking before going looking for advertisers. This way you have a lot more bargaining power.

You shouldn't really launch a site that is going to depend on advertising without having thought about how exactly you will sell the advertising and how much you will get. You should check on this as soon as you can.
