Did you install all the chipset drivers (and reboot) before trying to install the Audio drivers? If not your the laptop wont recognize the audio card. Please reinstall windows XP SP3 and see Dell Driver Install Order Page

I had the same problem with my M1710.

Microsoft “forgot” to add the Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) driver for High Definition Audio devices in the latest release candidate of the Windows XP Service Pack 3.
