I am wondering what is the average cost of a school tour for 5th and 6th class ?

It depends where the class is going.

They are going to the burren and doing water sports .The cost is 50.00 euro which I think is a little steep at the moment. I was told that was the normal cost for a primary school tour, and also that primary school tours are always more expensive than secondary. I'm very happy with my daughters school all the staff are fantastic and this I'm grateful for, but I just feel this is excessive at the moment with the reductions in working hours etc that are effecting most families at the moment . Needless to say I will come up with the 50.00euro for my daughter I just feel there must be cheaper options available. The school asured me there was not

That's about average, I'd say. Buses have become very, very expensive. Our sixth paid for their tour from money they got from their confirmation. Is this an option for you?

The activity type days tend to be quite expensive, Add the cost of the bus in and it's more expensive still. It all comes at a time of the year when parents are looking at paying for new school books etc.
I know that in the schools with which I have been associated, there has been more of an influence on cutting down costs and trying to source interesting yet inexpensive alternatives, sometimes in the immediate are. Many children will never have visited the local university, the local company etc. Very interesting, educational, yet inexpensive options can be sourced with some creativity.
Funnily enough, I remember some years ago, it was a group of parents who came complaining to one school that the school bus trip wasn't long enough!! That particular group wanted their children to travel further away. One parent felt that if the children were back before 8.00 p.m. that it wasn't much of a tour!
I suppose you can please some of the people some of the time ......

have it say it sounds a bit steep to me - I've had tours to all kinds of places over the years with 3 kids but most I paid was 46 euro last year. I think your right overmantle - there are lots of places that don't cost the earth that many schools don't explore. One teacher did do a series of walks around town instead of big tour and roped in local guides who knew local history facts and stories. In all the years I think it was one of the best tours and the kids loved it as they got loads of days out of it.

That sounds about right when you factor in the bus - it's the cost of the bus that makes tours so expensive.

I heard of a secondary school that recently notified parents of how many thousand Euro Bus Hire costs their school annually. A scary figure!

with insurance difficulties now, the schools that bring kids on tours are very brave.

Some schools are not going on school tours this year because of financial hardship.

It seems steep to me. We are told to try and keep costs under 20 - 25, except for 6th class, who can pay more themselves because of confirmation. (Supposedly - the parents still end up paying).
Then I am teaching in Dublin, so buses can end up quite a bit cheaper, because we can usually use Dublin Bus.

My lad went to Trabolgan on his 5th class tour and it cost €30 total. He thought it was the best tour yet as most years the best part of the tour was the craic on the bus. I think he'd have been happy just being driven around on the bus for the day. ;)

I know some local schools go on a day trip to Oakwood Theme Park in Wales.
