Has anyone ever done/heard of anyone doing their devilling outside of Dublin after they have completed their BL at Kings Inns???

Im not from Dublin and am hoping to do the Kings Inns this year but couldnt afford to stay in Dublin to do the devilling. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

You have to do your first year with a Dublin practitioner.

After that, you can do a second year elsewhere if you wish.

Yes, you're not supposed to Devil outside of Dublin unless the High Court is sitting elsewhere or your master has a part Circuit practice.

Hi folks, is there any reason why this is???

I can only surmise it's the most practical way for Devil's to get the necessary exposure to Court etiquette and rules in the main. Many courts do not sit in the regions, e.g., Master of the High Court etc. While sittings have been moveable, in the main the High Court is based in Dublin, as is the Central Criminal Court.

    Makes sense.

I thought that was changed a few years back with the numbers coming down to practice? Devilling with a busy Circuit practitioner is still more beneficial than devilling with a non busy Dublin practitioner.

Strictly speaking there shouldn't be, save for circuit.

Where was this published? If it was I am unaware.

Bar Council were annoyed with finding Cork devillers this year and are cracking down on it, even told a few they would have to re-think their choice of location! So while a few got away with it in previous years, doubt it'll be a runner next year.
By the way, you might be eligible for a maintenance grant which would pay for half the Kings Inns fees and save you e6k or so for rent?

Just on another related issue, is there a given period that you have to start your devilling say October, or can you begin within any period so long as the period of devilling runs for a year? thanks

Yes it would be within a given year. The reason is that a Master would agree to take a Devil for a given term/period, of a legal year. So that begins in October and ends in July for court sittings. That doesn't mean that the Devil would not be able to work if work was offered over vacations or indeed to take district court work etc.

So its someone else's practice i.e., the masters, that would dictate availability etc.

Just to clarify some issues relaing to Devilling generally; is it possible for a devil to work independently of his/her master, ie if a devil is offered work in the District Court for example, in his own capacity? If so, is this a common feature of the period spent as a devil and would the devil need his master's approval in order to undertake such work?

Technically speaking the pupil should consult with the master on all matters or pertinent matters relating to practice. If briefs are given to a Devil for District work then yes, the Devil has audience. The problem would be, does the devil have the expertise! ;)

The pupilage period should be just that, and while work may come the master is unlikely to not allow a devil undertake minor works even if they are his/her own, once the devil remains available for work as a pupil in a fulltime capacity.

I think a lot of masters would probably encourage you to do the district ct work provided it did not inconvenience the Master greatly. Often, if necessary you would arrange with another devil to substitute for you. I would always ere on the side of caution and discuss it with your master first though. Generally your master would tell you if they thought you were out of your dept...

    unlikely to not allow

Not written beautifully. But yeah, I agree with you.
