Router to router wireless question.

    Hey Tech Heads,

I got NTL 20 meg today and installed it beside my tv/ps3.
My laptop picks it up and runs no problem.

    My question is this.....

I have a desktop and an xbox360 upstairs, and they used to be connected via router to eircom telephone modem. I've cut off eircom, so no internet upstairs for now.

Can I use my linksys wrt54gts linksys router upstairs to wirelessly connect to the netgear router i have downstairs.
I bought a dongle for wireless, but I'd rather have it thru the router if possible.
I don't know how to configure the linksys router, so it acts like a wireless hub.

    Help.....

    Thanks

    Pukey.

    anybody???

You want client bridge mode which is possible on WRT54G variants if you replace the firmware with OpenWRT or DD-WRT (thought this is a good idea in general).

Does it bridge and accept clients as well?

Under wireless, you can set the wireless mode, one of which is client bridge. Under that you set the SSID of the other wireless router. Wireless key and encryption is set under the wireless security tab.

i think i've got it working. Speed is slow though. I'm rebooting now to see if it improves. 2meg at best. I get 12 from the laptop in the same room. Can you boost signal from a router?

You can boost the signal, under wireless -> advanced settings, you'll see the TX power down near the end. This option is a tad naughty since you could be transmitting at power levels that are technically illegal. It may also not endear you to neighbours on the same channel.

sweet. I might try that tonight. i've got a signal of 24%. I don't even know if that will improve my speed. i might need to boost the router downstairs. it's a netgear, so i'll have to start over with a mod for that. Do you think i can improve my signal by boosting upstairs?
    Thanks for all the help.

By law you have to stay under the 20db power level bracket !

The feds will be knocking on your door otherwise ;)
