Hi, xp safemode has black screen but no start menu etc. Done ctrl alt delete to bring up task manager and then file new task (run) then typed msconfig and hit ok. This brought up the system configeration utility, where do i go from here or is this even the best way? Thanks

Why are you accessing Safemode for?

Sorry should have explained better. Looks like computer has a virus and cant access windows through normal or last known config start up via F8 button. I get as far as the welcome screen, and then error message comes up "cannot find the locally stored profile" corrupt local profile. Then it says logging u on to temporary profile. After a few mins message appears svchost.exe app error. Click ok to terminate program. I have tried booting up with the xp cd to reinstall but hasnt worked. Hopefully can fix in safemode but not sure how, sorry for long response really wanna get this working again :)

Okay, I don't know why safemode won't load. Seems odd but maybe the virus is affecting it.

Do you anything on the computer that you really need? Files or folders? If not put your pc/laptop on and tap f10 this will take you to restore mode, which will basically restore your c drive to it's factory state you will lose all information though. Via F10 you can also use system restore, try a system restore 1st and see what happens, if not I'd advise doing a c drive restore, that's if you are cool with losing whats on there.

Keep me informed how system restore goes for you.

Thanks a million thats worked. Its almost back to normal now. Got the usual problem with screen resolution in that icons appear large and i cant get on the internet because resolution is defaulted at too low level and wont allow me to change. This is where ive hit a brick wall, normally i'd just run some drivers to fix this, but none of the drivers on C drive seem to be apps that i can run, i have a driver cache aswell folder i386 but heard these might be viruses. Cant download drivers frm internet either. Ive got a dell laptop latitude d400 with windows xp are my options down to buying a driver cd or is there any other way? What driver would i need to get on internet? Anxious to get online so i can get avg virus scan etc, look foward to hearing frm u

I can't help any further I'm afraid. If you don't mind losing your information you can reboot your c drive via tapping F10 on start up. This is will restore your laptop to it's factory condition and you are good to go.

If you can't take this route I'd advise visiting the dell forums and asking on there. Hope you get it resolved.

Sorry I can't be of any further assistance.
