Digital Freeview box in ROI

Hi just wondering if anyone can help, my dad bought a digital freeview box in England in the hope that he could hook it up to his NTL Box and record digital TV but has had no success. Just wondered if anyone knows someone who has done the same or if it can/can't be done. Thanks :)
