    Hi lads,

Having trouble with the gearbox in our '03 Trajet, its diesel and I believe these are more prone to gearbox problems. Anyway I've just done a quick search on ebay with no luck on finding a replacement gearbox.

Was told to get a gearbox from a 05 or newer model so if any of ye have any idea of where one could be got I'd greatly apprieciate it.
    Thanks.

    Maybe try traynors up north?

That might be a bit too far to travel as I was hoping for somewhere nearer to the south-east.:o
Thanks for the info all the same tho.

Can be delivered. AFAIK they have drop off points down south

Most Trajet diesels had the gearboxes done under warranty by Hyundai. Check if your car has been done already or if they will do it now.

They do weekly drop off's at certain locations (they do in galway) Show up and grab your part. Great service provided by them.

There was a modified synchro released by Hyundai for these.Honestly cant see them covering a 03 under warranty though.

Try your local dealer though--I do know they covered some of them under a 50/50 scheme for cars outside warranty.

If they flatly refuse ask them to submit a "goodwill" warranty request to Hyundai for you.Hyundai arent bad like that covering problems they know about.

Try Bohernabreena Gearbox Centre in Tallaght it may be repairable?

Hi - I have an 06 diesel trajet. I think there may be gearbox problem. First had trouble going into 1st gear for a few weeks now same crunching sound and sort or grinding going into 2nd. Had brake pads replaced few months ago. It sort of feels like it needs to be oiled or something. I'm afraid to go to a garage in case its major. I see above that these give problems and Hyundai have replaced some of them. Does anyone know if 06 models have had to be replaced, or is there such a thing as gearbox oil.

    Many thanks.

Clutch might need changing/adjusting. Unless the car has been abused can't see an 06 gearbox going. How much mileage do you have on it?

try naas gearbox centre, they're still doing free fitting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 212 ✭✭kildaremum

Hi - theres about 90,000 k so less than 60,000 miles on it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,399 ✭✭✭Bonito

Bit odd. That's less than my dad's and he's had no problems with his. Hopefully just the clutch needs adjusting.

Just an update on the gearbox problem. It needs to be replaced - its that syncro thing to do with 1st and 2nd gears. Its 6 months out of warranty and hyundai have offered half the price of the part - I am livid - this is a recognised defect which was circulated to garages and probably would have been recalled if it wasn't such a big job. If this has been presenting in 03 models therefore they should have rectified it before now.

Has anyone any advice on what to do.

Not being smart but if you don't get it checked, it could turn major!!

As I dont know anything about gearboxes (and I'm not being smart - just asking) would the worst thing be that it sticks in gear and I have to have the gearbox replaced - which is what I have to do now anyway, or could it cause other major damage too.

See my post above. Its the 2nd gear synchro that needs replacing and its been a known problem since these Tragedys were released over here.

Its an 06 you say??Id ring Hyundai direct(rather than go through a dealer) on the Naas road and kick up a fuss. They know well about this problem and have done for years now.If its only 6 months out of warranty they really should do more than cover half the price of the part--well at least they used to when I worked for them.

Spoke with Hyundai head office (not really spoke - gave out stink) about gearbox problem on a car just out of warranty etc. They said they would have another look at it and they have now agreed to cover the repair under warranty. Needless to say I'm very happy and leaving the car in Monday morning to have the work done.

So I must give them credit for agreeing to do this work.

Something stinks--Hyundai delivery is 3 days max from Belgium unless the parts have to come from Korea which is still only 10 working days at most.

Well thats the way it was when I was there but Im out of Hyundai 3 years now so unless somethings changed but as far as I know its still teh same.

Huyndai Ireland (not the dealer) told me yesterday that there is a manufacturing issue at the moment - to be fair, the dealer was told that it was an ash cloud problem.....believe me, Im not happy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,340 ✭✭✭mullingar

Tell the dealer to get his head out of the ash cloud!

It only grounded certain flights for a few days at max!

Smells like you are getting a fob off from the stealer as the stealer may be delaying all warranty work (as it pays them less than chargeable work)

    Edit,

Should have read previous post fully

    Hi

As it happens I have NOT had gearbox sorted yet. It was booked in last Monday week and at 8.30 I got a call to say part had not come in and it would be a few days - haven't heard yet.

    Regards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 460 ✭✭Malta1

Will you do me a favour and ring the dealer and ask them when the parts will be available?
dealer told me that it would be available on 30th May - atleast thats what his system says. Hyundai Ireland told me on the phone that it would be atleast the 6th June

    Cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 212 ✭✭kildaremum

Dealer says they don't know when part will be available. I'm going on holiday next wednesday (2nd June) and was hoping to have it fixed before then - hope this volcanic ash doesn't re-erupt because I won't be able to take the car !

I have a 00 Trajet and I have just been told the gearbox is going to need replacing or repairing. How much does something like this cost. I really don't want to be ripped off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 212 ✭✭kildaremum

I was quoted 1,100 approx. in the Gearbox Centre, Naas, for a reconditioned gearbox and that was with free fitting. Mine is a diesel car so don't know if that would make any difference.

'06 Trajet from new and a few weeks ago I began getting a 'crunch' going into 2nd. It's ok if I take my time changing but an almost 4 year old car should not do this. I am taking it to the dealer I bought it from on Friday and I am glad of the advice here - thanks to all concerned. Like you, I will hit them with 'you knew about this before I bought'. I was at a gearbox repair place today and you are looking at the guts of 2k and that's just to repair it, not for a new one.:(

Bohernabreena gearbox centre has been waiting since Feb for parts for Trajet

I'm looking for a 7 seater , but money is very limited , and was considering a Trajet because they seem to be good value ..

I know a guy locally who has a 07 diesel and I asked him what it was like ,, " piece of sh*t !!" he said ..... it only has 81klm / 50k miles on the clock , he's the only owner , and it's gone through 2 gearboxes and 1 clutch so far ....

I'm gonna have to get something older , like a galaxy , alhambra , sharan etc. I really can't risk being stuck with a bill for a new gearbox ..

funny thing is ,, I spoke to another trajet owner yesterady , 2 litre petrol version , 05 and he couldn't praise it enough ..

is the gearbox problem mainly with diesels ??

Yep--Mainly the diesels. The only Trajet I`d buy if I was buying one would be a 2.0 litre diesel automatic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,399 ✭✭✭Bonito

+1. If you're going diesel then go with the auto.

Petrol go with the manual. My dad's has 110,000 miles on the clock and still has it's original box and clutch. It went for the NCT last week and only thing it failed on was worn brake lines at the rear.

    Emission test was 0.02%.

My 06 diesel now has 100,000 km and only problem I've had is gearbox and it is at this moment being repaired under warranty. The gearbox problem is a known defect, other than that i'm happy with the car - its very spacious and comfortable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 gimpina

The gearbox problem is only with the diesel as far as I know. There is a kit which is now available and I am waiting for Hyundai to get back to me but I think they will do it under warranty. The petrol version wouldn't pull you out of bed. I have spoken to a lot of owners and they say it's fine once you get the repair done. If I was buying one I'd make sure the gerabox was done by hyundai. Apart from that mine has been great and I usually get 45-50 mpg.

In my opinion every diesel trajet should be recalled to get these boxes fixed once and for all.

The petrol is actually quite a nice drive but its a petrol guzzler.

I dont know about the current synchro kit but from what I remember this is the third such modified kit released for the car.The first 2 didnt solve the problem and it started to manifest itself again in a few thousand miles..Id still be wary of buying a diesel manual though.

thanks for that , if anyone comes across an auto diesel with less then 120k , clean and for under €4500 please pm me ,, or similar Auto , alhambra , sharan , galaxy , no previas as the drivers head room is too low for me ..
I am looking for an ajutomatic , not manual unless I really have no choice .

I know it's a tough call but you never know ..

Is the Zafira any good ? they do seem a little smaller though that's my main concern

    many thanks .

Hyundai did repair my gear box at no cost but after a row. The upshot is that it was fine until about 3 months ago and now reverse is difficult to get. The only way I can engage reverse is to select 3rd then gently let the clutch up to biting point then select reverse as normal. It doesn't always work so I try all other gears first and eventually it engages. Hyundai? Never again. This is a manufacturing problem and as such it should be paid for by Hyundai. Apart from this problem I have no other issues with the car and yes I do some serious mileage 185K now from new. If anyone out there has heard of a solution I would be very happy to hear from them,
    G
