Advice for Cold Calling CVs

    Hi All
Just thought I would pen this post here, as it might be relevant to many of you seeking employment

I run a marketing agency, and have done so for 9 years. I am always amazed at the 'To whom it may concern' emails and mail I get with CVs

This is the rule of thumb I use, maybe other employers do too - who knows?

If you can't be bothered to call the offices and ask to whom you should address your application, or whether there are positions currently available then in my eyes you are not the type of progressive individual we want as part of our team

You will have much better luck in taking the time contacting prospective employers, getting an actual name, trying to get to talk to them (and yes this can be difficult sometimes but persistence is a virtue and is noted by employers) and worse case, the person tells you that they have nothing for you now, at least your CV will stand out more 'on file' than others as you have taken the time to make a proper contact with a relevant and personally addressed cover letter

A cold call CV in my eyes shows laziness and a 'throw loads of them at the wall and see what'll stick' approach. Remember your first contact with the company via your CV application is your first impression - the cold call CV is the equivalent of a limp handshake!

Sorry if the above sounds like a tirade - I just feel that some applicants could benefit from such advice - there are probably some decent applicants who don't ever get noticed as the emailed randomly sent CV to the info@ address simply get deleted

Be interested in others experience and views ... and yes - I think a photo on your CV always helps and stands out more from others on the desk

But a lot of times you won't get past reception.
I'm basing this on the many recruitment agency threads I've read here.

For sure in many companies you can't just call up and grab 10 minutes of a busy managers times to discuss possible vacancies. Sure what if everyone started doing this?

I appreciate that difficulty. My advice would be to ask the receptionist for the correct contact for the relevant department. To request the email contact of the relevant person if they won't put you through or if the manager is too busy. Then email them an introduction (not a CV. If they have no positions then there is little point in wasting their time or yours). It's just about proactivity in the end, and showing initiative - but I appreciate the difficulties. Probably suits an SME more than a faceless corporation
