can I recomend a site called satelites.co.uk to you,it speciolises on one of its forums about receiving the channels you refer to.

when you say abroad it depends on how far abroad you mean!if astra2a,2b,2d,hotbird1 is not in line of sight from the country you have no hope of irish channels, bbc world/prime is available almost anywere on the globe.

You will have to pay to watch Irish channels and the English free to air channels are all tightly beamed towards U.K(the astra 2c satelite@28 degree,s east.

dish size, type of receiver etc come into as well as all sorts of other issues I cannot mention here.

like i say try the fringe reception forum on the site i have mentioned:)

Not strictly true as it depends on where you are and the size of your dish but you should be able to get the all BBC's CH4 and so on but not RTE as this is scrambled. You don't need a sky box as such just a sat box that can pickup all the free channels. There are loads of choices on ebay.

Thanks, edited my post as I was referring to RTE only.

it is possible to receive the free to air bbc and itv as well as many more on a free to air receiver from astra 2c 28.5 degrees east.a sky box is not nescessary except for Irish channels.further away from uk you go.the bigger the dish you will need, also a good L N B(low noise block convertor)helps, although as i said if by abroad you mean the section of the clarke belt were geostationary satelites orbit is hidden by the horizon&28 is out of site,no chance of either!

The Clarke belt is named after the late great sci-fi writer Arthor C Clarke who first realised the math that a satelite placed in orbit at 23 and a half thousand miles would rotate at the same speed as the Earth and so appear to remain still over a location.(geostationary orbit)

    wish you luck:)

I am in a similar position to the OP and would like to receive RTE in the UK. I have read on a few different sites that you can get the Irish channels on Sky IF you set up (and register) a ROI/NI Sky subscription, and then use the card in the UK. What I'm wondering is if I could take out a multi-room subscription at my homeplace and then bring the extra viewing card to the UK and use it to get RTE?

No , thats why they insist on multiroom boxes being conncected to the same phoneline to stop you doing this.

You could of course take the card & receiver to the UK with you but you'd have to eventually pay the 2 full subscription's for it when Sky kop your not connected to the phone line.

Well worth it knowing you'll have the home channels even though your abroad.

How would you get the caller id's to match?

Since blueface does not support modems, wont do much, but you can have a setup in both places with the same blueface subscription.

With blueface, (much the same as with a mobile) one can appear to be calling from a number in one country, while physically in another one.

Interesting, if they could get the analogue modems working this could be an option. Bear in mind though that sometime they tell both boxes to ring at the same time which would give the game away.

There is a way to solve that. :)

Basically unless both Sky boxes are physically on the same phone port, Sky will catch on.

There *ARE* ways if you have access to reprogramming networks to make two ports behave like one. But these are not open to most people.

You can set as many blueface extensions to display the same number as you want. And you can have 3 extensions ring from the same number
