I'm looking for advice. Just bought a Maxtor Basics Ext Portable Hard Drive (320GB). The USB cable supplied is a USB V-Cable and instructions consist of a diagram & two sentences. It looks like I need to make two connection with two separate USB ports on my laptop before connecting the other end to my drive. Is this right? I have never seen a cable like this and I don't want to damage the drive before I get going.

Yeah it needs the extra power from the 2nd port to power it properly.

Not always. A lot of devices I have seen that come with that cable can still work with just one port. Using the two won't damage it though.
