Working for the UN

I was looking at the thread on volunteerism, and there was a lot of contempt for the way the UN run volunteering programmes. I volunteered with SERVE, the Irish organisation last summer. I went to Brazil building houses and I loved it. I'm in my final year of studying law at the moment and I was hoping to go on to do a masters in human rights and work with the UN. From what people say about it though it's full of chancers and not the best way to go about making a difference. Could anyone clarify matters for me? Ideally I'd like to spend a few years working in this area, not the rest of my life.

I think a (large) number of people do the UNV as a career choice, rather than as a "normal" volunteering role. It isn't volunteering in the sense that you're building houses or being a teacher but volunteering in the sense that you're working for the UN for free for a year or so, and than hoping they offer you a job after.
a masters in human rights and work with the UN.
The Irish Gov. does (or did, they mightn't be doing it this year) a very good paid human rights intern. The call normally goes out around the start of the summer, it's worth keeping an eye out for it if thats the area you're interested in!
