Firefox spinning wheels

Firefox has suddenly got terribly slow, spinning its little rainbow wheel for ages any time I click on a link or a tab.

Is this a known issue, and is there a cure?

Might be an add-on problem. Download any new ones recently? Try disabling all of them and see if it makes any difference.

How do I disable them, Sad Prof?

If you can get into the Add-ons window in the Tools menu you can disable them there. Or alternately, hold option as Firefox starts up.

Neither worked. Opening with Option just invoked Safe Startup version, and there's no Add-Ons menu under Tools. Hm.

So there was the same spinning beach-ball problem in safe-mode?

Try this then: Go to the Library folder at the root of your hd, inside you'll find a folder called "Internet Plug-ins". Temporarily move everything inside of it to Desktop. Then restart Firefox and see if it makes any difference.

Weird. There should be. What version are you using?

    It crashed in Safe Mode.

Version 3.0.8 - the one in Irish - by the way.

It seems to crash less with the add-ons removed, though it does halt a bit.

EDIT: No, still spinning and freezing with them gone.

Do you have this problem with other web browsers? Safari, Camino, etc?

I'd be a bit suspicious of this. Might be a system language problem. Have you tried the English version as a test?

Well, I've been using the Irish one since it came out - a year or more - with no problem until now.

    No problem with Safari.

I'm having all kinds of problems with firefox. Not least it prevents my computer from sleeping. Now I'm getting this slowness and crashiness, too. I'm nearly thinking of going back to v.2.

I'm stumped. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, lukat. Don't forget to put those plugins back. Maybe it's just a problem with the current version of Firefox. I stopped using it as my main browser years ago. Is anyone else having these kinds of problems?

Off-topic but where the hell is the Mac version of Google Chrome?

I'm having no such FF problems (V3.0.8), got a few plugins too but zero major issues...

If you want to get a feel for google's chrome on mac then why not give stainless a go, it's apparently quite similar to chrome.

What is this Chrome? Came back from a brief holiday and it's still happening. The first four words of this post took something like 90 seconds, the rest was normal. Hm. A friend has given me Firefox v2; I might revert to it. How would I save my bookmarks and the reinstall them on the new version, please, if anyone knows? I could put them on a flash drive, but where do I find them?
