depends what your doing, i have a 1 gig, which means i can only have one game at a time on my stick, 2 gigs is plenty, you can easily transfer games on and off, most games are under a gig, some aren't
you can safely update to latest sony fw and then use this great guide

2gb mem can hold bout 2 or 3 great games eg fifa 09 nfs etc

You can just format the memory stick afterwards.
The FW is on the PSP internal flash memory after the updating.

the FW only takes up around 20mb, its minuscule, you can delete it from card after you install it as another poster has said,

back to bug everyone, when buying a memory card does it need to have mark 2 on it

i got my battery today and ended up ordering a 16 gb card off ebay. The guide you give before wouldn't work for me. So i looked for a new one. I used pspgrader i think that was the name it worked amazing just plug in the psp and off it went. The battery was loose i really had to hold the battery in while the custom firmware installed and it took a little while . Its working great now . One question can i play online and go on playstation store now i have custom firmware 5.00 installed
