I think it's a bit early to be looking for a summer job, but there would be no harm ringing every single shop/chipper/restaurant in your area and asking when do they think they'll be taking on summer staff.

I am in no way being smart or anything.....kid you know the situation out there at the moment. 400,000 unemployed. Try your best but dont get disheartened if you cant get anything. Maybe something like babysitting the off time, or washing cars in your area or something like that may do?

Deco - have to agree with Dellas on this, Galway city and county is the worst affected area of Ireland in my opinion for lack of jobs out there at the minute.....certainly drop your CV in everywhere by all means though...

Some employers might prefer to hire a young lad who they can 'control' rather then an ex-builder who thinks he's too good for the job...

They also won't have to pay him as much.

He's in a better position than a lot of us to get a minimum wage job right now.

Why not try the one time "certainities" ie Dunnes, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi... times are tough for these companies also but there is bound to be a minimum wage position for some one such as the OP... isn't there?

Well if this new story is anything to go by, it sounds like the supermarkets are doing ok.

    The lad is 16.
Aren't there restricted hours they could work such as no late nights? Though that's doesn't explain what lounge staff do

One more headache for their manager when doing up a roster.
I could be entirely wrong but I'm fairly sure there is legislaton on this .

Yeah its after 10pm, and not before 6am. But i think you can go as far as 12pm in a bar, under certain circumstances.

Im in the same position as OP, 16 too except live in Dublin, probably have a better chance. I remember last year alot of places said they would take me except i was only 15 so thought it'd be no problem this year. Ha was i wrong .

If anybody knows anything give us a shout please :D
