    Right, last night my laptop went to **** and I had to reboot and lost everything. EVERYTHING!!!! Thousands of songs, podcasts, files.... Gone forever!!!

    ...including the password to connect to my wireless modem. (The guy saved it on the desktop)

    Anywho, I have to connect with the feckin' ethernet cable now which is wreckin' my noodle.

    So is there a way to connect with out the password? or get a new one?

    I just don't wanna ring them to come out.

    Ah right, not too sure what way the engineers set up the netgears.. maybe you could ring upc support and ask them did they store your password?
    worse case is you could press the reset button on your netgear and this will reset it back to orgional and you'll have to set up the encription again yourself..

    Open a command prompt.
    Start -> run > "cmd" and hit enter
    Then type "ipconfig" and hit enter
    This will give you your IP settings.
    Find "default gateway" this should be something like 192.168.0.1, could be anything really. More info to do this here ...
    Type this into an IE browser address bar.

    This will give you your Netgear router screen.
    Hopefully you still have the default username and password if any otherwise you will have to reset the unit to factory settings.
    Google your make and model for default username / password.

    Your wireless passphrase for WEP or WPA or whatever will be in there somewhere depending again on model.

    Best of luck , shame about your music and files etc

    I have UPC and my netgear default details where,
    Username = Admin
    Password = Password

    To login to router its 192.168.1.1

    Hope this helps.

    That sounds a bit.. vague, how exactly? If a virus deletes the partition table, the data is still there, it is relatively easy to retrieve the data, the main thing is to use another PC to prevent data being over written, restoring etc.

    There was no virus involved. Just I smacked my computer, it went all crap on me, wouldn't start up, so I rebooted. I'm not too concerned about all the stuff, I'll eventually re-download it all.
