Botch job "respray" options

As some of you know, the paint job on my joke is olive drab, matt. The matt paint does faint rather badly over time, not helped by the fact the the army guys did the odd badly done re-spray here and there, so my van is now forty shades of green.

So the plan was to get the correct matt paint and a roller and do up the van in one colour, bit by bit as weather and time allows. Theoretically, rollering it shouldn't be a problem, as matt paint is very forgiving when comes to little inaccuracies in painting and I don't want a show finish anyway.

    Well ...that's the theory.

Did a few spots over the weekend, rusty bits that needed sanding and primering and boy, does it look shoite

The paint is 1k acrylic and no matter how much I thinned it, it always went on blotchy, too thick in one place, not thick enough in another. It also dries very fast, so if you roller over the same area again half a minute later it starts sticking, pulling off in places. The end result is a "paint job" that looks like textile wallpaper.

So, working with a roller is out ...spraying seems to be the only option.

Short of handing over hundreds to a professional, what are my options?

The paint was dear enough and I mean to use it up.
Anyone know of place that could fill it into aerosol cans for me?
Anyone know a cheap sprayer system (something like a fence sprayer or one of those artificial suntan thingies) that delivers a resonable result?
Anyone know a hire place that would hire out a compressor and paint kit in the NW?

Again ...I don't need a perfect paint job ...but something that you could walk past without pointing and laughing (or crying in my case) would do nicely.

    Any help much appreciated.

Without causing offence (:D), most of the 'tool hire' places carry shed painting kit, which may not be out of the question for this particular job; well, you were doing it with a roller, after all!

Anyone ever worked with this to paint anything else than a wooden shed ...like radiators or other metal parts?

Halfords can make a 390ml Aerosol for you, if you have a paint code, or paint in a bucket. You can buy a cheap compressor with airtools for around 150 too if you want to do some DIY work.

Sounds like a new challenge for that young fella that did the Lancer a few weeks back:D

This is the candidate in question:
    55137.jpg

as you can see, a show finish is not required ....all I'm looking for is the same shade of green all over and not the faded mess as is (barely) visible along the A-pillar

Is there not some method of painting cars with a roller. I remember seeing some thing on forum with a old-ish car.

Quick google and I got this: http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=73119&postid=714196

    Good luck painting!

yeah remember reading that thread before a few months ago ^

That fella said rollering your car is all down to thinning it correctly and using the small foam 'professional' rollers, whatever they are... :pac:

That thread is definetly worth reading though

    peasant...

what route have you decided on going to get this monster all one colour...

would like to see some pics at the end of the re-spray to see how it turned out...

Still exploring my options ...off to the paint shop later to get advice on thinners and rollers, haven't quite given up on that route yet.

I think I used the wrong roller and and not enough thinner the last time.

Getting it spray painted will be the last resort

Lidl / Aldi do cheap sprayers from time to time. I got one and used it to paint concrete garden wall.

Presume B&Q or McQuillans would have them all the time.

    Or rent one
    http://www.hss.com/g/61491/Small-Cellulose-Spray-System.html
(or ask HSS what type of sprayer you need for your particular paint)

Don't use a fence sprayer, as it won't have the consistent air pressure needed to apply automotive paint correctly, or the filtration systems that a proper compressor has to weed out foreign particles. If you can, rent a proper setup, and if not, keep an eye out for the compressor with airtools offers that Lidl and Aldi do from time to time - they may be inexpensive, but they're not cheap.
