i am considering a satellite dish or a sky subscription to put a tv in my boys playroom. they are 12 and 9. obviously i dont want them to access any unsuitable channels. are there free adult packages on satellite tv. and if so is there a foolproof way of preventing access to them. 12 year old has a laptop and is a bit of a techie.
    thanks

If I was in your position I'd get a cheap fta box, tune in whatever channels you want and then pin protect the menu. This will protect the setup screens from being accessed thus preventing your 12 yo from adding any unwanted channels.

U can change ur password to whatever 4digit number u want afterwards so u can easily block him out from accessing any adult channels...and if he has a laptop id be more concerned whats he viewing on that...

Exactly. It's a lot easier to take off the filtering results in google's preferences than a satellite. Also there's better porn online :D

No point in shutting the Judas gate (I think thats what they used to call it) and leaving the barn door open - I presume you have parental control software on the laptop. Junior would need a specialist PCMCIA card in the laptop to connect to the satellite TV signal

I remember being like 13 when we got Sky (after seeing it at a friends) and the thrills that Men and Motors and Bravo bought:eek: as this was before the ubiquitous chat lines that litter Sky now. I later discovered bertieahern.com on Dial-up and it was frightening thought that this was how we reproduced! A few years laters I discovered the joys of previous.

Whatever about Sky or FTA satellite on Astra 28 there will be nothing harder than *boobeys*:D shown. I'd pay more attention to said techies surfing habits and install a keylogger or some sort of parental snooping software.

Definately - don't worry about Sky, once they don't have the PIN there's feck all that they'll be able to see. Anything on Bravo or the like is always late at night after 10pm or so - presumably any kids up watching telly at that time won't be adversely affected by said *boobeys* ;)

Much more important to keep an eye on the kid's web surfing. Don't go all nanny-state on him though, you'll only be resented. I've been a web addict since I got broadband at 14, I turned out OK (although I'm a cautious person). Just keep an eye that he doesn't find any unsuitable sites - but be especially vigilant for chatrooms. He will discover MSN and bebo etc so just make sure he knows NEVER to give personal details.

Interesting how a thread only a few hours old has had SO many views already, wonder why that is...

OP. always remember the watershed is 9pm and kids are very, very unlikely to see anything 'questionable' before that time, but how I cringe when I let my 9 year old stay up watching TV past then.

And for those who viewed this thread for info about Adult channels :p Forget Sky, Hotbird 13E is where it's at :pac: so a friend said...

Hispasat 30*W had it FTA and there was some freaky stuff on it, It can be a scary sat to watch at night, 13E is like Sky and the stronger stuff is pay only. I had to research it for testing purposes as I was thinking of becoming an installer once but decided against when I discovered I am afraid of heights.
