BRITISH scientists have discovered the “brake” to slow down and even stop all types of cancer.

Experts have worked out how the killer condition develops – with a complex network of genes dictating whether or not healthy cells turn cancerous.

This “exciting research” – which will also be used to fight multiple sclerosis – means weak spots in the immune system where disease may begin can now be pinpointed. This could lead to targeted treatments that would help save millions of lives across the globe.

Lead researcher Professor David Hume said: “This study has effectively shown us where the brakes are that could slow down or stop diseases like *cancer and MS. We genuinely believe this could lead to treatments and cures for many diseases of the immune system.

Judging by the use of quotation marks I would venture and a guess and say that this is "bullshit"

Kinda like a cigarette break but you save time by getting straight to the cancer?

One of the comments from there -
Cancer patients have to put up with a lot of pain. A free and easy break from the pain is an invention of mine called 'Post Sex.' This turns pain into pleasure. It uses the martial art method of jabbing a finger into the Jugular vein. While unconscious the patient's pain is turned into a pleasurable sensation more enjoyable than sex.

    ffs

There was a lot more of that article further down the web page.

The rest of the article is filled with a lot of "hope to find..." type statements. So they haven't any real solutions yet.

Sounds like someone is just drumming up interest to keep their funding going.

    Daily Mail wrote:
“I think the basic ideas are applicable to any cancer and they are also equally important for inflammatory and infectious *diseases because it is the basic biology of the immune system.”

It was previously thought a select group of “master” genes was responsible for controlling the growth of cells which can cause the conditions.

But the British experts have *discovered there are in fact hundreds of interacting “regulator” genes. They now believe it is variations in this network that explain why people could develop diseases in different ways.

The team hopes that by identifying weak spots in the gene structure they will be able to halt the growth of tumours and *enable the growth of healthy cells.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh said the findings could also lead to new treatments that target only the tumour. Current treatments such as chemotherapy target the cancer cells but they can also harm healthy cells and cause a wide range of debilitating side-effects, including nausea and hair loss.

It is hoped the discovery could also help in the fight against such diseases as myeloid leukaemia, multiple sclerosis and even arthritis.

Professor Hume, director of the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute, who led the study – published in the journal Nature Genetics – said: “If we understand exactly how the tumour arose and what made it different from a normal cell, then we have some kind of rationale for exactly where to hit it without having a massive effect on normal cells.”

Dr Lesley Walker, of Cancer Research UK, spoke of “this exciting research” and said: “This may eventually help explain why some people respond to immunotherapies and others don’t.”

Matthew Trainer, of the MS Society, said: “Every year we learn more and more about what causes conditions like MS. The more scientists understand what the genetic triggers are, the better able researchers are to find treatments and one day a cure.”

When they eventually develop the cure they should put it in cigarettes so people can smoke themselves well again.

You can do this already with weed, it slows the spread of lung cancer.

Yeah I heard that. I also heard a joint has 5 times as much vitamin C as a regular cigarette.

A cancer break is when you go out back for a smoke.

A cancer brake slows down cancer.

I'll believe when I read it in a medical journal, not a UK rag
