My TV has been bust for the last few months, since just before the new year. I finally got around to getting a new second hand one. I connected up my little NTL set top box but I only have a handful of channels. Is there something I need to do or is there a problem with the box? NTL customer support is ****, I was waiting ages and had to hang up as I couldnt wait any longer.

Get ready to wait... You'll have to call them and get them to re-activate your account. My parents had something similar recently. It was fixed in a matter of minutes but they have to do it.

the 5 channels you are getting you would get even without a card at the moment. There is a problem with your card.unplug the decoder, take out the card, wait a minuate, plug decoder back in,let the decoder find its home signal, insert card when prompted and press red button ok.

that is the least problem you might have.

all premium channels have switched to nagravision 3 encoding(by all accounts so far never been cracked)check for an ntl or chorus logo on the box,if their is none and say you are a tenant you may have a so called dodgy box all of which are obsolete.

value pack and go digital max pack are still available, not yet on nag3.
it sounds only two possible causes:a payment to upc did not go through and they have disabled your card, or your card needs either a jiggle in its slot or may,be a baby wipe clean across the gold colored metal part of the card.

you say you have not being using it for a while, everybody is getting a new card, sure its not in unopened post?

If none of the above the decoder is broken and upc will replace it.

As I said above. My parents didn't use their box for over 3 months. They called NTL where they did something on their end. All worked again. I was there when it happened and there was no card removing, replaced or hard reboots.

yes they reactivated the card.must have been an unpaid bill, havnt you heard things have changed since the end of march?

Wouldn't say that has anything to do with it. Apparently(like Sky) if these devices are unplugged for long periods they do not get updates. Thus the shutdown.

No, no it wasn't. All their bills are done by direct debit. It was from being inactive too long, Sky was the same (they have both).

I know things changed in March but it was a new STB and they haven't had the card changed. The problem was that UPC deactivated it from lack of use. Like what has most likely happened to the OP.

You may have the old Pace/NTL box, these have been withdrawn as far as I know.

Ah good. More misinformation which does little to help the OP.

The Pace boxes have not been withdrawn, they are not being issued anymore. New cards are being sent to people who have these boxes.

The OPs problem is that he hasn't used his box in several months, he needs it reactivated. That is all.

No, you're wrong. Those boxes were able to use illegal chipped cards sold by NTL employees on the QT. They are being taken out of service.

I don't think your right, as I have a small pace box and no sign of them coming to replace it.They just sent me the new card the other day.

Besides it wasn't only the small pace boxes that were getting chipped. The new ones were too.

/No more talking of anything dodgy!

No. UPC are sending out new cards, the old cards will become redundant.

UPC stopped using these boxes long ago so they are being phased out. UPC have no intention of replacing these as yet.

This is absolutely not the OPs problem. I am amazed how I told him how to rectify his issue in the first reply yet this thread is now full of irrelevant nonsense.

The same happened to a bloke I work with, he had to phone them to reactivate his box. Bills paid by DD, just hadn't lived there for a while.

I'm not sure if they send a keep alive or if the card has to send an "I'm alive".

    F1ngers, thank you. :)

I seem to be having the same problem with my TV.

I dont have an NTL box though, just a terminal thats on the wall with the basic NTL package.
Anyone have any idea why I might only be recieving a handful of channels? I would have thought that when I plugged in the cable that it should come through?

Also can anyone tell me how much a digital box for NTL costs? I was with Sky but switched over since they started screwing us around over money owed, then hassled us for money after we cancelled the account.

Do you have an account with them? You'll need an account to get the channels.
Their prices are on their website http://www.upc.ie

If you do have an account perhaps you'll need to retune your TV.

Have an account, just dont have a box. Ive tuned in the tv but its only finding 5 channels, but I have the basic package so I should be able to get RTE etc.

Yeah if you have an account you should be able to get ~15 channels. I would try to retune the TV, it sounds like it's not tuned. Maybe try a different cable. Failing that, call them. If you call to get a digital box, they'll make sure everything works. You used to be able to get the basic digital pack for €20 but I think it's now €25 with the DVR.

OT: The boxes mentioned weren't the small Pace ones, they were much bigger Pace units and all of them were swapped by UPC about 6 months ago as they didn't support Nagra 3.

Back on topic: I'd guess the card has missed some updates and either needs to be left for a while or reactivated.
