Lads i have a late 2005 VW Passat and i am getting very bad static in my radio, the reception is very very poor, i brought the car in from the UK a couple of months ago and its like that ever since. A friend of mine mentioned that the antenna is in the back window and the whole thing may have to be replaced, i am nt sure about that though. would anyone know of an auto electrician in midlands or as far as Dublin (i'm based in offaly) that would be able to look at it or better still if anyone who has experienced similar problems help me. Many thanks in advance

I had the same problem with my vw golf, does it have a after market cd player? I just went into halfords and bought a signal booster i think it was called. It plugs into the back of the cd player and the antenna pulgs into that.

Some VeeDubs with roof-mounted antennas need 12 volts sent down the aerial lead to power an amp in the antenna base, the same may apply to rear screen aerials. Stock radios should have that built in, but aftermarket units might not. Halfords do a connector for €20 that goes between your headunit and aerial lead and also connects to a 12 volt source on the back of the head unit. Don't know if that helps, let us know how you get on.

Have the same issue myself with the Audi. It started about 1 year ago and I have yet to find a fix anywhere.

Not sure if that will sort mine out, I have the factory fitted 6 changer Symphony unit.
Some stations are sound around town, but once you go out of town a couple of miles the signal dies.

It should help you pick up a stronger signal out of town. I could pick nothing up till i bought the signal boost thing.

I had a similar problem with a Golf, turned out the problem was caused by the radio auto tuning to get the strongest signal, think it was the TP button that turned it off as when it was off it worked fine. Id say in the UK the auto tune works, in Ireland it doesnt.

How did you install it? :)

I presume you need to remove the radio. I purchased the keys for that but someone was in there before me and can I hell remove it, even with the 4 correct keys. :(

You have to pull out the radio to fit it. As far as i know halfords offer a fitting service. Its odd your radio doesn't pick up a signal outside town tho with it been a factory fitted radio.

well at least i'm not the only one with this problem, i do have the 'TP' function on now you mention it, will try and turn it off and see how that affects it. Probably going to get one of those boosters also. It is a factory fit sat nav radio by the way. If anyone knows of an auto electrician who sorted this out for them let me know who and where. Many thanks again for replies. If anyone else has any more input let me know

Is it not the AF button that searches for an alterantive frequesncy and not the TP one

Ye that makes sense, will turn both off and see how they go. I have a handsfree carkit installed and am now wondering if that is draining power or causing interference, just a thought!

Thats funny you say that. I have a handsfree kit installed that I never use. Now I am wondering the same thing, I remember that it was hanging down on the ground and it may have been stood on, could this have pulled wires or that?????

Have any of you guys got your rear demister button on by any chance?

This can cause interference if the antenna is built into the windscreen as it is in the new passat and a4

    No not on at all.

Tried again to take the radio out with the 4 keys I have, got 2 of them to "ping" into place but the other 2 are butchered!
