Dublin spin: How far did I go?

Gave my Boards jersey it's first real spin today and having no computer (it's on order) I was wondering could anyone hazard a guess at how much distance I covered....

    Route was...
Start in Marino/Fairview, into town with the north strand road, along the quays, up College green, up dame street, through Christchurch all the way to Terenure, through Templeogue and Knocklyon to the bottom of Stocking Lane, all the way up Stocking Lane, past Glencree, Powerscourt Mountain, left at a crossroads near Kippure, through Luggala, left down to Ballinstoe, past Djouce Woods, right to Kilmacanogue, up the N11 and into Bray, up the coast road through Ballybrack, Killiney, Dalkey, Blackrock, up the coast through Ringsend, over the toll bridge, and back to Fairview.

    Did I break the century?

mapmyride.com will tell you, and it'll give you a good idea of the amount of elevation you gained and lost which is nearly as important (in my book anyway).

My guess is that if you started from DNS you probably did about 110km. Fair dues. :)

I just use Google maps myself, find it quicker to just drag and drop the route than in those other things. "Get Directions" (walking) with start and end and just drag the route until it matches what you did.

Google Maps is waay quicker alright, but what do you do for elevation gain?

Yeah, the elevation feature is all that 'map my ride' really has going for it. Moving that damn shrinking ad out of the way... It's amazingly finicky to fiddle with your routes later, especially compared to doing the same thing in Google Maps itself.

I don't have that in Google Maps all right.

Ah right, just wondered if you'd figured out a clever way to calculate it.

Can't understand why mapmyride is so slow and finicky. They've obviously overlaid their own route plotting onto Google's. I'd have thought the quickest approach would be to use Google's route plotting, and then use Google's API to gather elevation information from the selected route. I imagine that's what Toporoute do, but the presentation is a bit poor, and I don't think they give total elevation gain IIRC.

There must be another geek on here with time to write such an app. :pac:

Does it give you total elevation gain for a route?

Just played with it there, it does, sweet :)

It does have an annoying habit of going off centre when you zoom in, but livable with.
