Amid all the excitement across the pond with all the various college relay meets, the Irish outdoor T&F season kicked off with the low-key Leevale Open at the Mardyke. Small enough fields, especially on the women's side, which is suprising given there's prize money available (a rarity!) and unfortunate given the weather was so good (another rarity, and judging by the wind speeds, they weren't blown out of it down there either).

    Highlights:

Kelly Proper ran 11.93/24.32/6.10 for a 100m/200m/LJ trifecta of wins, plus a 1.60m HJ silver and 10.18m shot bronze. Busy day for her! I could be wrong, but I believe this is her best LJ season opener yet.

I'm guessing the women's 3000m results accrediting the winning athlete with an 8.40 victory are a minute off.

Chris Russel ran a wind legal 10.78 over 100m. Good start for him. He could very well make it onto the senior relay team. Unfortunately he just missed out on getting the Euro Junior standard out of the way by .03, but I can't see him not getting it. He also ran 21.95 for 200m.

    John Laffey ran a 48.09 400m.

There were three over 7m in the men's LJ, including Chris Crowley (3rd) who won the HJ with 2m.

Although young, Edmond O' Halloran is a class act. It was over 3ft put he was so smooth over the hurdles. He is built like a rake too. Tall and if he strengthens up and sticks at it he will be one to watch, no doubt.

Nice pic of the kid here and he looks the part. Very grounded and unassuming too which will help in his development.

I think that was the winning man's time, they seem to have updated the results now.

I was at Leevale yesterday with my kids. While we had a great time and enjoyed ourselves and the kids all did well, there were two things I found to be bad about the event Im afraid:
1/the PA system was very weak, it was very difficult to hear anything at all, this lead to a lot of confusion and kids missing races.
2/the toilets - we were not allowed to use the toilets in the main facility, everybody had to walk to the toilets in the pavilion. There was 3 male and 3 female toilets for all the people there on the day. Im not sure of the exact numebrs, but there were hundreds there anyway. There were long queues of children for the toilets, and the toilets were in a pretty bad state. Now Im no Health and Safety expert but Im pretty sure that this breaches public health and safety guidelines. Given that there were so many young children there this event should have been planned better in terms of having sufficient toilets available.
I hope that for the next event in Levale that the organises will rectify both of these!

I think the toilets weren't great but in the overall scheme of things it was a good day and a great day for the sport. Events for tiny-tots to Elites like Kelly Proper. If we had more clubs like Leevale producing athletes and putting their neck on the line and putting together a program like yesterday, then our sport would be in rude health. PA was fine I thought. Aside from the Q at the toilets (which if you had kids could be a problem) it was good and they need be applauded. When I was a kid at open sports we would go for a whizz in the ditch!!

Maybe contact www.leevale.org to let them know.

PS: Relays were great. You could really see the clubs that practive with the batons. Menapians U11 boys were as slick a baton changing quartet I have seen, acceleration zones, 'hand', brilliant to see.
