Query: Replacing CD DVD Drive on Laptop

I have an Iqon Laptop Model 8050QXX. CD DVD Drive needs to be replaced.

Firstly, can I just buy one like I see on Adverts.ie, dissemble my laptop and just slot it in? Do I need to know the spec on the existing (broken) one and check if the replacement is compatible?

Secondly, would it be easier to just buy an external drive? How do they work? Do you just connect with a normal USB cable and off you go?

If anyone can give me a steer, I'd appreciate any suggestions.

    Cheers.
