central locking unlocking itself

    Hey,

My fathers 96 Rover 600i ( same as Honda accord ) has an unusual issue
with the central locking. The keyfob is broke so we have to lock unlock the car with the key which is no big deal really, however a few weeks later when we locked the car and while taking the key out of the door lock it unlocks all the doors again... You turn the key to the right to lock all the doors and then the key springs back to the neutral position and unlocks everything again. The key has to be in the neutral position to get it out of the lock. Whats going on here?

I have taken the fuse out of the central locking as it's the only way to guarantee the doors will stay locked. However now the alarm is non functional as a result of disabling the central locking as somthing in the locking mechanism triggers the arming/disarming of the alarm aswell as operating the door locks. Confusing..

    Thanks,

Check the courtesy light switches. If the car thinks that there's a door partially open, then it will usually refuse to lock as a warning. Common problem with Volvos where the courtesy light switch is built into the door lock. I'm afraid I don't know enough about Rovers.

Suspect one of the door locking motors has failed, if so this would cause you problem.

When I turn the key I can see all the buttons on the doors popping down and up so I would assume the motors are ok?

Yes that's correct but IF one of the door motors is faulty i.e it won't stay in the lock position, thus not allowing the central locking to go into lock mode.

Test: Sit in the car and lock one door at a time from inside and you more than likely will find that pressing down on one of the door buttons it pops back up again. This will be the door with the faulty door lock motor.
