Mink fence???

    Hi folks.

Birdwatch Ireland are constructing a fence on an island on the river shannon not to far from me in order to protect nesting birds(corncrake etc) from mink attacks. It seems to be a mesh fence about 4 foot high around the perimeter of the island which is about 60 acres in size.
Whould this fence be capable of keeping out mink or are they wasting time and money? Would mink not simply climb over or under it? Is anyone aware of any similar projects around the country?

    Cheers

Mink can climb trees and dig tunnels. I don't think any fence is going to be too efficacious. Systematic trapping and euthanasia is the only thing that really seems to work.

how are ducklings etc to access the water ,its a typical tree huggers attitude to a problem .

the cost of the fence would pay a man to catch, kill the mink every nesting season for many years.

plus it would create a bit of employment in the area .

Got to agree, the only way is to trap them

There was a 10 week period last year during which the N.P.W.S employed a member of our R.G.C to trap mink in the Shannon callows area, they provided him with traps and he was monitered by the wildlife rangers, this was an effort to protect nesting birds in the area.
