What is it ?

Hi I was walking along a strech off river in the west at Easter very remoat aera alot off bogland running beside it . I saw a grey bird about the size off misle trush at the waters edge its tail diped up and down like a wagtail but its tail was short its beak was not very long any info appreciated.

Sure it was grey? Sounds from description more like a Dipper. Try google images for Dipper.

I agree that the size,behaviour and location suggest a Dipper although the colour is all wrong. Was the water fast flowing?

Thanks for the replys It seems it was a female dipper they are grey in apperance and the river was fast flowing

Size, colour, bobbing up and down all seem to fit...

No it seems it is definately a Dipper. The description and location fit. The OP can look up a Common Sandpiper but it's a world away from a Dipper .

It is almost certainly a female Dipper. Size, habitat, behaviour all point to it.
