Should work fine, have the Linksys/Cisco PAP2T too(and with Blueface) and it works a treat.

CAn I get a Geo no. on pay as your go with any provider??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 66 ✭✭guigui

I don't think any provider will give you a geo number on pay as you go, you'll need a subscription.

Maybe take a look at the Freedom Basic plan of blueface : http://www.blueface.ie/products/freedombasic.aspx

You can get Linksys PAP2 ATA boxes from Hong Kong on Ebay for a lot cheaper: around 30 euro and that includes postage.

    Search for Linksys ATA PAP2.

These boxes are a generation older than the current ones but perfectly usable.

I have a PAYG account with Blueface and a geographic number as a €5 per month add-on if that's the type of setup you were wondering about.

Hi tech, I bought 2 in the last 6 months, both in tiptop shape from 2 different vendors.

    One is called Depotzz Depotzz.

The other is called Billionax, this shop does not seem to have any items for sale at the moment.
As said, I had no problem, it took about 2 weeks to arrive, but of course no guarantee.
Come to think of it, I never had any problem with Ebay, except for 2nd hand computers that are not in the state as described...

    Looked at web site recommended by WCool above and wonder which of these to order;
    http://search.stores.ebay.ie/DEPOTZZS-electronic-and-digital_voip_W0QQfciZQ2d1QQfclZ4QQfsnZDEPOTQ5AQ5AQ27SQ20electronicQ20andQ20digitalQQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQfsubZ1QQsaselZ150458253QQsofpZ0

I'm new to this VOIP business but determined to leave BT and start using VOIP and Mobile phones only.

I understand that if I switch to blueray broadband I may be able to keep my original phone number. I then pay monthly for broadband. I can then use VOIP for what are mostly local, mobile and national calls.

I currently use skype with headset for international calls.

    Would appreciate any advice.

That is exactly the idea. Instead of having a phone line and some sort of BB, now all is coming in over your BB connection.

So it's most useful for people who are not on Eircom or BT. It can still be useful however if you have any of the usual phone providers if you call a lot.

Blueface (and other VOIP providers) are considerably cheaper then BT, NTL and Eircom. I'd say if you call for more than 30 euro per month on Eircom, Blueface is probably cheaper.

It can also be useful if you are often abroad and have a broadband connection there, you can bring that box and plug it into your BB and people can call you (and you can call people) as if you are in Ireland.

The box in the link gives you 2 possible phones connections (1 more than most household have so!)

But: mobile phone calls are still quite expensive, if you make a lot of landline to mobile calls, you might be cheaper off with some sort of package deal by Eircom/02/Vodafone etc

back to your situation: with BT you get your phone line thrown in as well. Are you switching BB provider as well? If not, as said, Blueface + BT BB is only cheaper if you call a lot. Check out the tariffs.

    Thanks for that Wcool.
My most recent BT bill was €220 for April, March was €116.
I'm on the BT business broadband Option 3.
Most calls are to mobiles but a lot are to local and national numbers.

    I have a Vodaphone package so I am considering;
    1. Dial mobiles from my mobile only.
    2. Switch broadband provider to blueray.
    3. Get my tel. no. registered with blueray so people can still contace me.
    4. Use broadband for surfing net, making local, national and international calls phone calls with my existing phone using Linksys PAP2 ATA.

May not save a packet but am currently paying BT and Vodaphone for packages which might best work if I make more calls than I do.
Switching to broadband I don't have to think about cost of calls too much.

Not sure I can follow you completely:

Blueray? is probably Blueface. Blueface is NOT a broadband provider, so you still need to keep a broadband provider (not necessarily BT though).
Instead of using BT as when you phone, you only use BT's BB connection, judging from what you phone per month you will have a substantial reduction! And I mean substantial, probably paying for itself in a couple of months.

Best to do is to fire up a spreadsheet and do some calculations using the tariffs of Blueface, BT and your last phone bill.

However, I don't think you can have BT broadband only and switch your phone number to Blueface. Not sure. Best to check with Blueface how to handle this.

Sorry to make it even more complicated but in your case I think really worth investigating: Least Cost Routing. You can buy a small box or computer program that checks out what kind of number you are calling. For instance if it is a mobile number, it will use your SIM card (mobile to mobile is cheapest), if it is national it will use BT and if it is international it will use Blueface or whatever is cheapest. This is a more advanced setup though and not for the fainthearted.

I have to have a land line to get ADSL broadband, so that cost is fixed.
I am with Eircom and have a 'package' which gives me national calls under 1 hour duration as part of the package.
I also have a Blueface account.

I have found that if I were to dispense with the call part and only pay for broadband and the line through Eircom and make all calls through Blueface, there would be little difference in costs .... Eircom would be cheaper the last time I priced it.

Where I gain is with calls to other countries. There are huge savings to be made there with Blueface compared to Eircom, so all my international calls go through Blueface.
I also save considerably by making VOIP to VOIP calls to people without a land line and only a mobile phone. It means I don't need to phone their mobile number which is costly on both Eircom and Blueface.

The reason I posted this is to further encourage you and anybody reading to investigate the costs, based on the number and type of calls you normally make.

regards. (Oops just realised I am late posting in this thread, sorry)

Does any one know any other Irish site where the Linksys PAP2 is available from. I have been serching and cannot find one. It seems to be gone off Dabs.ie.

    Thanks.

    ARGHGH!!

I've finally discovered a flaw with my beautiful new MacBook Pro. It only has one socket for both audio input and output, so my not one but two headsets/microphone are now kinda useless since i can only plug in either the headphones or the microphone at once. Blast.

Anyone have a solution to this ? USB set maybe ? Bluetooth - on my old computer i used a motorola bluetooth earpiece on the computer but there was a horrible delay and it was useless - is this a problem or was i just unlucky ?

whats the best, cheapest way to solve this ?
