Competition today at my local club was a fourball and it was played using 3/4 of your handicap as thraed title suggests.
I was just wondering is this common practice in yere home clubs for a four ball comp or is it just club rules?
    Cheers.

It's standard alright... an odd time at my club they will run a "2-man team event" which is basically a way to have a fourball but with full handicaps. I think they have a couple in the year is all.

For fourball matchplay, the lowest player goes to scratch and it's three quarters of the difference in handicap for the remaining players... eg, A=4, B=10, C=6, D=12 handicap.
A plays off scratch, B gets three quarters of the difference between 10 and 4 so 4.5 so he plays off 5, C plays off 2 and D plays off 6

As already said, standard practice. I cant help thinking though that it favors the low handicappers. They lose less shots than the high handicaps. I suppose that's the whole idea, or is it.

Can be a bit harsh on the high handicappers alright a 28 h/cap could loose 7 shots while someone of 2 looses none

Someone off 7 loses relatively more off their handicap than someone off 22...
with the use of 3/4 and then rounding that is always going to happen.
I'd certainly prefer to play against two low guys in fourball matchplay than against 2 18's and giving away a brace of shots.

The two that won are playing off 11 and 13 (full handicap) so played off 8 and 10 for the day and finished with 47 points.
They must have played pretty well. It was good conditions on sunday too which helped.

Not sure i agree with you on the first bit, using 3/4 and rounding the 7 handicapper goes to 5 and the 22 goes to 17.
I think the 7 handicapper has to be a lot more consistent with his golf than the 22 handicapper therefore he can afford to lose the 2 shots a lot more then the 5 of the 22 player. Having said that there is nothing better than to lower the flag of a low handicapper and listen to them grouse about the inequality of the handicap system. The reason they are playing off 7 is that they are good consistent golfers. If they are not playing competitive golf regularly and are playing to a higher handicap than listed then maybe they should bring in some correct scores and allow their handicaps to rise.

It's just the percentages... the 7 guy loses 28.5% of his handicap, the 22 guy loses 22.7%
That's all I meant by relatively more...
I would disagree with anyone being able to afford to lose shots better than anyone else. If your handicap is relatively right, then I don't see how it could be 'easier' for the low guy. Your comment about 'lowering the flag of a low handicapper' is crass too....

Apologies, I did not realise that you were the only person allowed to have an opinion or to respectfully disagree.

    Happy golf.
