I am under 25 and still living with my parents due to losing my job a while back. I am not claiming the dole because my parents don't want to give out their personal info; i guess thats fair enough but its a sh!t one for me.

I have heard that if you're doing a FAS course you can claim JSB without a means test. Is there any truth in this? It is something that could be very useful until i get a job again.

It seems unfair that SW is looking for your parents details for Job seekers Benefit. I thought that was paid based on your PRSI payments and not on your means.
FAS pay an allowance equal to what you'd get on the dole or on another SW payment. For example and unmarried mothers allowance or DPMA(disabled persons maintenance allowance).
Those paid more on SW get more on FAS training scheme.
At the moment you would get nothing fro doing a FAS course, apart from meaql allowance and travel allowance because you are getting no payment from SW.
It might be useful for you to move out from your parents and get another address from which to claim SW and build up a history of getting a payment from SW, then get on a FAS course. Once under FAS you have to attend the course but at least you won't have social welfare prying into your parents affairs, if this causes them concern.
Job seekers assistance, paid based on means, is another story and every thing will be probed.

I think the OP wants to claim the dole [job seekers allowance] not job seekers benefit but cannot since his parents do not want to give their earnings details to the social welfare office. Their personal details would not matter if he was looking for job seekers benefit.

OP you will have to move out of home to get what you want since they are going to always means test your parents whilst you are living at home.
