i'm 32 and have never had a car... never needed one... i was just talking to a friend about getting one in the near future... she said that insurance companys will treat you as "untouchable" if you're over 30?

    could this be true?

How long have you had a licence? Do you have any driving experience?

There is nothing so arbitrary or blunt as using just age when offering insurance....unless you're 17-18 and have no experience and a provisional licence.

In any case it's illegal not to provide a quote. It would be discrimination for the sake of it.

    Can't see why.

Generally insurance reduces once you get to 25 so I'd expect you'll get a much better quote than a first time driver at 18 or 19.

What car are you buying. I'd imagine your quote will be under 1500 Euros if it has a 1.6 engine or under.

The best thing you can do is to go onto the Quinn Direct website and get yourself an online quote.

    that's what i thought, surely it's agest.

i tried to get a quote on 123.ie there... filled out all the details... it said "unable to get a quote at this time"

i've asked for a call back, so i'll get to the bottom of this.

i've no licence... i'm just thinking of getting a car.

how much should i expect to pay... i assumed i'd pay less than a 17 year old... maybe a grand?

Forget about online quotes, you need to get out the Golden Pages and ring everyone for the best quote.

    +1

I got €400 off the Hibernian online quote by just walking into their office.

You won't get an automated online quote because you have no experience.
As the other posters said, ring around and you will bet quoted.
You'll definitely get a few quotes but they will probably be at least around the €1000 mark. Once you get your full licence and a year or two of no-claims bonus, your policy will shot down significantly

Yes. The OP is thinking of getting a car, and wants to know roughly how much insurance will cost.

My wife and I both started driving in our thirties and had no problem getting insurance. With allianz at the moment, though started with AIG I think.

really... my friends brother, tried to get insurance, first time, early 30's... they quoted a ridiculus quote.... so he had to go name driver on his brothers car.... was this long ago?

Only learned and qualified to drive when I was in my early 30's.
First year insured as a named driver under a relative's policy (an extra 450 on top of their premium, which fell to 350 extra for the second year) with Quinn in a 1.1 hatchback.
I then passed my test, went out and bought a 2 litre, got insured with quinn again (using the year and a half's named experience to even get a quote) for about a grand.
Renweal this year and quinn only dropped the premium by 120 quid...moved to FBD and got my 2nd year's premium for €630.
A lot of the insurers have limits on the engine sizes that drivers with low experience levels can drive...as far as I can see they worry a lot more about your engine size/expereince than they do about your age/experience or your age/engine size.
Some go so far as to restrict youto stupid engine sizes like 1.4l for your first 2-3 years of driving on their policy.
You are not untouchable, but you will still be restricted for the most part and your lack of NCB is going to hurt for the first few years.
Get out there and start the learning process now...I regret not having done it years ago (even though I could barely afford it back then).

I am in the same boat at the moment. looking to get my first car and i'm 30. Thing is i want to get a nice range rover (03 or 04 model) so the engine size is kind of big (2.9) so most online places wont give me a quote. I really want the rover as the prices are decent these days and i will need the 4x4 etc.
After some searching online i came across this site ( http://www.xsdirect.ie/ ) that will insure anyone with any experience on pretty much any car worth more than 4000 euro. there are a few catches but the seem not too bad.
Have a look at the site and see if you can live with what they offer. I have not gone for it yet but i might have to if i cant get a quote from anyone else.
By the way, my quote for a 03 rangerover vogue 2.9 worth 19,000 on a provisional license was about 1800 euro. But i have to pay the first 1000 euro of any claim. Or, 1200 euro for the same car if i pay the first 4000 euro of each claim.

+1 on that. Simple answer and truthful.
If your not going for a mad car you will get insured for fook all.
I would imagine anything upto a 1.6 petrol you will be grand. 2litre diesel ya should be grand also. As long as its not a turbo mad thing.
