Just the usual flicking through second hand cars on the interweb on a lazy Sunday afternoon and came across this:

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1371105

Going in with cash you would probably buy it close to €20k. I'm not too clued up on 7 Series used prices but I would imagine that car cost the original owner more than 3 times that much when new 4 years ago.

    Any thoughts?

At least 5 times that new, not 3! And depending on options, maybe 6 times.
Good buy alright if one were in the market for a comfortable car for 20k.

3L petrol?? Well I suppose you could afford the fuel tanker you'd need following you everywhere with what you save! :P

Meh, it will probably do 25mpg. If you have a mondeo or passat 1.6 you won't see much more than 35mpg. And if it only does 20mpg, so long as you aren't a travelling salesman it won't make that miuch of a difference.

I think that's the smallest engine it comes in!

Typical Irish attitude to be honest. It won't cost too much more to run than a lot of petrol saloons. I remember a 1.1 Fiesta from the 80's that used more fuel than a lot of 2 litre petrols. 25mpg will be easily gotten from it, and while it's a nice bit to be drinking, it's not catestrophic if you're not doing high miles.

I still think I'd go for a V8 engine that the 7 series should have.

You might get 30 on a run, but i'd be prepared for sub-20 around town. Still worth it in my book, although i'd be looking for a bigger engine in that car myself.

Anyone got a cached list of Pat Keogh's stock the day he closed??

Me thinks that might explain this.

I'd imagine that would waste more fuel than a 740i having to pull around such a big car. The 730d makes more sense in my opinion.

There is simply amazing value for money to be had right now. I'd love to be in the market myself.

The diesels are relatively expensive to buy second hand. You would need to do a huge annual mileage for the 730d to be cheaper overall than the 730i.

I'm opinionated, but I feel a car like a large executive saloon should have a petrol engine. And not just a 6 cylinder one either.

    +1

Lucky that there are a couple of 2004 745i's advertised at a 20k asking price so! Getting cheaper than bringing in from the UK now....

That's probably the reason why the one linked above is so cheap. The 730d is the better car because it has more low down torque and would at least make decent progress of moving the car around.

I totally agree that an executive car should have a petrol V8 at least. I don't understand how some people can trade pleasure for lower running costs.

That's probably the reason why the one linked above is so cheap. The 3.0 litre straight six petrol is a fine engine, but the 730d is the better car because it has more low down torque and would at least make decent progress of moving the car around.

How can any car above 10K be considered a recession buster?
Just buy something older and cheaper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

Why 10K and not 5K then?

I don't, but I know of one car that I was keeping an eye on price wise. It's now in another dealer in Limerick and it just happened to go up 5k in retail, which Pat Keogh had advertised at 5k less for a month or more.
