As above my bros keys are locked in the ignition of his mark 4 golf gti. he forgot to turn ignition on after he put key in, left it for a few mins and as expected car locked!!!

    Options?
    Break window?
Go to VW, will they have such thing as a plastic emergency spare key that will open the door??someone mentioned this and how much would it cost?
    Cheers

Try phoning a locksmith, and if that costs more than replacing a side window then I'm afraid he will have to break the window.

    This happened me before.

You can wedge the door open (with a bit of wood) enough to get a coat hanger in. With a lot of patience and persistence, you will be able to turn the key and remove it.

Good luck. Grand day for it...

Yea could even get a bit sunburn doing it!!! :D

Dont break the window. Wedge out the top of the door with a thin lever and a very soft cloth. Get a wire inside and either open a door or try to get the keys out.

It's a little unsettling that so many posters here are familiar with how to break into a car. :D

Did you try opening the boot?

So Golfs lock themselves with the key in the ignition?

go with the lever and soft cloth. If you're lucky, there could be a button for the central locking alongside the electric window control panel on the drivers door. Hit that with a piece of long wire, obviously a welding rod would be ideal, but clothes hanger wire should be strong enough to push it down. Locks should all open for ya. Will be a little more awkward to turn the key in the ignition with that wire I'd say.

Same thing happened to me last week. Like the other two ppl said there's usually some give at the top of the door to shove a piece of wire through to try to manipulate to door-handles open. I found that coat-hangers don't keep their hook too well when your trying to pull the door-handle open and my friends mum gave me these wire things she uses for putting up christmas decorations that have a slight hook at the end of them that worked perfectly. Be very wary of marking dents into the door or car body when you try to force it open a little to fit the wire through, or tearing the rubber liner that goes around the door to seal it, I didn't have to worry about this cos some scumbag had already tried to break into my car a couple of months ago.

if you get in from the passanger side it might be easier to hit the button.

i had to break into my ibiza before.. just get a wooden spoon, wedge door open at top and use a clothes hanger to open door.

took me about an hour cause i had to get the hanger round the snib and pull it up.. can be done tho.

My wife did the same thing once, she was frantic when she rang me. It was starting to rain and the top was down.

My mk4 golf has a dead bolt so if i lock my car and the window is opened if i put my hand in and pull the handle to open the door it wont open. So he might have to get the keys out or else try and press the remote locking on his keys if the car has it.

Yeah, but the car thinks its been locked from the inside. If you pull the door handle on the inside it might open...

    Here's a friendly tip.
If the top is down on your convertible, you do not need to wedge the door open to retrieve your keys!
There is another way into the car... ;)

The reason it locked itself is because the solenoid in the drivers door lock is gone so the car doesn't recognise that the drivers door has been opened,VW's like most cars have a built in security feature where as if you remotely open your central locking but then realise you forgot something in the shop and turn to run back in the car will automatically re-lock itself after a few seconds.because the solenoid is gone and the car doesn't recognise that the door was ever open this is what has happened,as a result you won't be able to open the doors by pulling the inside handle with a hanger or by pressing the "lock all doors" button on the drivers door.

You are going to need to keys that are in the car or a spare key i'm afraid.

going gently in with a coat hanger or similar is the route i use..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,132 ✭✭✭bazzachazza

When you do get it open might be an idea o finally get a SECOND key cut so this doesn't happen again.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 53 ✭✭04CELICA140

He got it sorted on Monday, went to VW i think.
He got an emergency plastic key that just opens the door.
So he has that for the future cause I bet it'll happen again.
The key cost 66euro by da way!!

Get the drivers door locked fix or replaced and it WONT happen again, simple as.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 53 ✭✭04CELICA140

It will happen again theres nothing wrong with the lock, he was told it happens in all golfs and some audis if you do not turn on the ignition the car will lock itself. "Quote man in VW garage:D"
