Seen a very interesting documentary on the KLM-Panam 747 crash in Tenerife, 1977.
What a disaster that was, nearly 600 people killed. The Dutch pilot did not come out very well on it. No one on the fuel laden KLM survived

It was just a re-hashed "air crash investigation" of the same incident. Was still interesting to watch again though.

Still the largest mortality rate of any aviation accident.
(Note - Sept 11th is higher obviously, but that wasn't an accident).
Terrible alright. PAN-AM pilot made a mistake, but not one that should have turned out as critical as it did. Hard to justify the KLM pilot's actions really. It's a wonder they don't fit infra red cameras to planes since then. If they can fit them to a €50,000 car surely they can manage it on a €150,000,000+ aircraft!!

The Pan-Am should have went off the runway at a nearer exit to the taxi way was that the mistake?
But I guess the KLM guy committed a bigger sin, taking off without proper clearance, especially with the poor visibility. But we all take these risky decisions out on the road each day. Split second decisions can change a life. In this case it was 580 lives unfortunately.

I found the story of the woman (then girl) who got off at Los Rodeos instead of completing her journey as planned pretty amazing.

There was a diversion in place from some other airport at the time of the accident leading to congestion and possibly risky decisions being made.
