New Garda Cars with new lights on roof

Im down in cork and there are some new garda jeep type vehicles with the new lights on the roof . My friends are under the impression that the gardai who take out these vehicles are armed units , like they are always armed response or somethin? Is this the case are the units in these new jeeps with lights armed
