Any new model Polo 1.2 for 3k would be rough I'd imagine. Have a look at a Seat Ibiza or Skoda Fabia (both the same car with a different body). Punto's are reliable enought bar head gasket issues...if you find a good one cheap and have a few quid of your saving put away just in case it wouldn't be a bad plan. VW's are not as reliable as they once were but to call them unreliable is a bit overkill.

If it was me I'd be looking at a 2001-2002 Ford Fiesta with the 1.25 Zetec engine - IMHO the best car for the money and I had one as my first car

I got an 01 Skoda Fabia 1.4 with just under 65K for €2,300. Solid car and feels like a slighty narrower (2 adults rather then 3 in the back) Golf or Corolla. Seen more advertised around the same price bracket. Well worth a punt.

    This too shall pass.

Never driven one. Without checking the figures I think its gets good reviews for being more sporty character and possible more powerful than the VW engines of similar size. The Fiesta is generally more fun to drive and cheaper to maintain. Thought it doesn't feel as solid inside. Bit plasticiky. Etc. The non Zetec Ford engines aren't as much fun.

There are two main engines in the Fiesta - a 1.3 or a 1.25. Both may be advertised incorrectly as either one or the other. 1.3 is old hat but is in lower specs. LX or Ghia spec would have the 1.25. It's more powerful, fuel efficient and fun;)

I bought a 1L polo last December and sold it this week for 2500....was well pleased with meself considering whats after hapening to the price of cars.
Had no problems with her but 1L just wasnt for me!
I think polos are very reliable id just go for a 1.2 or 1.4

My sister had a 1.2L polo and it was great! It never caused one bite of trouble.
