Am probably in the wrong forum here as I never talk about computers on boards, sorry!

    Have a big problem.

Im writing an essay on my laptop which at the best of times is a little bit slow(the laptop, plus the essay writing).I save it everytime im finished for the day and when i click "save as" and then "save" for the correct title a little box always appears saying " "neuro essay" already exists, do you want to replace this?" and i always click "ok" rather than the other option "cancel"(i know I'm writing this in baby language but just want to keep it simple so i can get some help)
So the problem is, when i clicked "save as" today and then "save" when the right title was selected the screen came up saying "do you want to replace this" only problem is...the place where the icons saying "save" and "cancel" on this little box is empty.the words arent there and iv clicked all around where they are supposed to be and nothing works.and if i try and cancel or click on something else on the page the little box wont let me do anything until i select an option on it...and i cant

what do i do???im afraid to do anything like control alt delete because i really cant lose what iv written so far.help?!!!if someone knows what I should do but its too long to explain in writing I can call you.

    Hope someone knows....

sorry to point out the obvious but you DO know that by just pressing "save" in the FIRST menu INSTEAD of "save as" then it just replaces it
Save as makes a new copy which is why you get the replace message.
If you're really worried about loosing it select it all (control + a) and copy (control +c) (thats holding first control then tapping the respective button)
Open up notepad and paste (control +v) it in. Then save that.
as for the no icons showing up it might be slow or something more virusy. I recall a lockdown kind of program run on school computers that disabled all icons appearing in menus like that and the desktop. Save it in notepad like i said (start programs accessories and somewhere from there)and restart your computer

Are the icons gone entirely? or are they just greyed out?

Save will be greyed out by default, if you didn't make any changes to the document

    select it all

I couldnt select anything on the page so wasnt able to do that

your advice was better than my boyfriend's though who just said "why dont you just save it".....

and thanks, someone else pointed out to me yesterday that i could just hit "save" each time ha

thanks for your advice people but before i saw your posts i just controlled-alt-deleted and when i turned my laptop back it recognised it wasnt saved and recovered it ha so no need for the panic.

as is quite obvious im AWFUL with computers

might help if your running xp or vista.

Basically brings ur computer back to the laST restore point. If that was yesterday (unlightly) great.

Office has a recover documents console in it as well
