Yes, a Legal Resident Alien may join the US military. Also a illegal alien residing in the US may be drafted into the US Military (all residents legal or illegal have to sign up for selective service). Currently the US Military does not allow illegals to volunteer for service. I have heard of illegals who committed fraud when the joined by lying, and this was almost always caught and resulted either the member remaining in the Military and gaining citizenship or being deported (I never saw that happen).

Once in the Military there is a fast track for citizenship of the service member and his immediate family (wife children), even faster overseas

Since September 11, 2001, more than 32,000 soldiers have been granted U.S. Citizenship. Thanks to President Bush enacting the Fast Track To Citizenship program in 2002, now more than 8,000 foreign citizens enlist in the U.S. Military each year. The U.S. Military recruits new soldiers from all over the world including Europe, Central America and the Caribbean. The fast track program gives foreign citizens an incentive to enlist in the U.S. Military.

CONTACT THE U.S. ARMY - The U.S. Army is the largest branch of the military. You can receive specialized training, money for a college education, U.S. Citizenship and food and housing. There are many combat and non-combat positions open. You can choose which specialty is best for you based on your testing. You can contact the U.S. Army at goarmy.com. Basic training is usually up to 9 weeks long.
    Step2
CONTACT THE U.S. NAVY - The U.S. Navy offers careers in some high technical areas. If you want to be on the ocean or in a submarine, this may be the branch of service that you would be best suited. You can contact the U.S. Navy at www.navy.mil. Basic training is usually up to 9 weeks.
    Step3
CONTACT THE U.S. AIRFORCE - The U.S. Airforce teaches recruits in many highly technical areas. Much of the training that you receive can be carried over to your civilian life for a great job. Very few men actually become pilots. You can contact the U.S. Airforce at www.airforce.com. Basic training for the Airforce is normally about 6 weeks long.
    Step4
CONTACT THE U.S. MARINES - The U.S. Marine Corps is the smallest branch of the military besides the National Guard. You can contact the U.S. Marines at www.usmc.mil. The Marines boot camp is normally about 13 weeks long.

You could enter the green card lottery to get a green card but the chances of success are slim
