Advice on working in Northern Ireland

    Hi there,

I've just been given word that I'm going to start a job in Belfast next week. I'm hoping for some advice on working up there. I'll only be working for six months, I'm 23 years old, no dependents. I've been reading up the Borderwise website, but I'm not sure what applies to be and what doesn't as I'll only be there for six months.

Will I need to get the UK version of the PPS number? Will I qualify for a tax free allowance? I'll be paid in sterling...do ya's think I'd be better to open a sterling bank account and get paid into that or get paid directly into my current euro account?

Any information or advice would be appreciated :-)

    Many thanks!
    ~Brian

    hi brian
i worked up there on contract myself last year.
i did have to get a national insurance number and open a bank account.
unless you have utility bills or a good proof of address you'll need to get a letter off your employer to open a bank account.
id just ask your boss for a letter straight off just to not waste time.

    CatFromHue, thanks for your response!

Does anyone know if I'll be entitled to a tax free allowance?

Brian - not 100% sure ref the tax free allowance as left the UK 12 years ago, give the Belfast Inland Revenue office a call on +44 845 302 1469.

You are entitled to a tax free allowance of £6,475. It is likely you will overpay in tax if it is only for 6 months so make sure you claim at the end of the tax year.

Definitely open a bank account up there. I assume you will be living there?

That's the annual tax free allowance though and if they know you're going home they can adjust it accordingly. Either way you do get a tax free allowance, pro-rated or otherwise.

NI number is easy enough to sort out, as is a bank account. They seem to be a LOT more relaxed here about the proof of address requirements than they are in the rest of the UK - some kind of letter from your employer should suffice.

    Welcome to Belfast :)
