Ticking noise in sequence with Tyre??

    Ok got 2 new tyres last week got them put on the front and the front ones put to the back . Since then iv been getting a ticking noise thats in sequence with the revolutions of the wheel i.e when going slow its slower when fast its faster its only audible with the window down and its quiet , you cant hear it without the window down , and it is a new noise.

    Iv checked the threads for stones caught and cant see any ?
    any ideas?

    Not an answer to your question, but it is recommended to put the new tyres on the rear. I know it's counter-intuitive, but apparently it's important for stability while braking.

    Really never heard that. Well the ones i took from the front are in very good condition so no worries on that front. thanks :D

    I thought it might be the bits of rubber too so but since i bought iv driven cork to tralee and back and a load of other bits so the new little bits of rubber are basically gone. i went back to the place that fitted them and the fella is sound he drove the car and said he heard it too, so he agreed to have a look in the morning for me but to be honest he doesnt have any ideas really i think hes goin to just have a look for anythin unusual

    I presume that its coming from the front but is it coming from one side or both?
    If you jack up the car and rotate a wheel, do you hear anything?
    What tyres are they?
    Could there be a small stone trapped within the tread?

    Its hard to judge but id say left hand side probably the front.

    I didnt get a chance to jack up yet we doin that in the mornin at the tyre place and will rotate by hand to see, we checked for stones no sign :(

    Very sure as said all the threads were checked for stones so its fairly hard to check for stones through a sticker isnt it :confused:

    Happened to me a few times, usually stones, put one time got a dark coloured screw very hard to see, the tyre was deflating very very slowly. Was raining the day I brought the car down to have it checked and with the wheel off you could see the air bubbles coming from what looked like the head of a small nail.

    Have the exact same problem with mine, Cant swap around tyres around as i have 235,s to the front and 255 to rear. it like this annoying ticking/knocking noise only audible when window is down. (not window!)
    I took wheel off and had good look at tyre, no stones or nails. had a look at the brake caliper and nothing there either to suggest anything.
    would love to know what the hell it is!!!

    If it was a stone it would have disappeared at motorway speed, it could be a nail or screw hidden in the tread pattern, a small nail hid from me this way for a while inside the dot of the tread.
    Just a thought, do you have hubcaps held on with cable ties?
    sometimes lazy fitters stick the end of the cable ties back into the holes instead of cutting them off flush.
    The long end flicks past the brake caliper causing a sound.
    Worth checking if you have hubcaps.

    It could also be wheel weights on the inside of the rim. Some cars have fairly tight tolerences between the inside of the wheel and the arch/strut assembly. Wheels with incorrect offset can tighten these spaces. Jacking the car up will most often widen the space. Take the wheel off and check the tyre for defects but also check the wheel arch for scratchs or road dirt that is rubbed of in one spot. (please do not place yourself between the car and the ground if the car isnt secured with axel stands.!!!!:eek:)

    The most likely answer is a nail or screw this happened to me and i checked and checked and could find nothing then as i was walking up to the car there it was. a screw had stuck in the back tyre even thou it sounded like it was coming from the front any way best of luck

    Just back from place that fitted new tyres he put it up on ramp and checked for any unusal sign dirt rubbed off in places etc and no problems we then jacked up the front of the car and ran it in gear and we couldnt get the sound.

    Checked all tyres no sign of nail etc.
    Then brought over a mechanic that works next door to him he took it for a spin and said its defo not a mechanical sound as far as he can tell. He immediately went messing around with mud flaps and one was a bit loose as the screw had come out and it could possibly flap a bit in the wind, he said secure the flap and then check it out.
    Will report back later .

    secured mud flap noise still there.
    Shes due for a service in early june so i will get my mechanic to check it out while he has it and see what he thinks

    If they changed tyres then its probable that they changed the valve stems too, which makes it possible that the little base piece of the valve stem may have accidentally fallen into the tyre when replacing. That would fly all over the place in the wheel while moving, but you wouldn't notice it at high speed. Its also possible that while changing the wheels around, they might have caught the dust shield behind the brake disc and bent it very slightly, so that in one spot the brake disc would be clipping it slightly. I've come accross this before, its a simple matter of pushing it back a few mm. Can be done without even removing the wheel. Jack up the front left if that's where the noise is coming from, and spin it. If it sounds like a metal rubbing sound, my moneys on the dust/stone shield. Its also possible that a little stone found its way in between the shield and disc. Whichever way, I wouldn't worry, if your mechanic is going to look at it, should be fairly straightforward.

    yeah, the balancing weights are another possibility, where the stick-on weights on inner side of the alloy wheel protrude enough from the wheel to rub the brake caliper. The fact that it was driven on the lift with NO sound, means that there's a good chance that it may be a rear wheel making the noise then. Anything simple would've been probably noticed immediately.
