We do have them, but they're very select.

We do. You just have have to be, loike, awesomely uber-cool to know about them. We wouldn't want the unwashed masses of the middle class joining in now would we?

In college was there not always one persons house you'd go to?

    There probably are loose similarities.

Obviously I can only go on what Ive heard but UCD Commerce Society or something, they are big into there Americanisms. So are some of the more social societies in TCD and DCU apparently running "red-cup" nights etc.

I dont think there is anything wrong with it at all, by all means find an excuse for a party, Im just answering the OP.

I don't know anything about them apart from what I've seen in films. But based on that, they look like a load of shite. They seem to organise plenty of piss-ups but we don't need organisation for that in this country, thankfully. It comes naturally to us. I drank like a fish in college and hey! I'm still drinking like a fish \o/. No crappy initiation rituals needed.

It seems to be a form of societal hierarchy within a college. More like a caste system than anything else.
While I'm sure it's foundings were steeped in the hope of accelerating learning I can't see what todays relevance of such a society is other than division and accelerating the goals of high acheivers.

I suppose we dont have them because we have, (or had) free ducation for all, where one was judged by the merit of intellect rather than stature or belonging to social groups.

One of the weirder aspects of American culture IMO. More about personal gain than good.

If we had Fraternities then we could have lots of American-style 'Douchebags'... I for one would love the opportunity to go around in a pink shirt with a popped collar, and a perpetual annoying grin :D
