One of the men, Peter Sunde gave his reaction to the verdict: "It’s so bizarre we just have to laugh about it."

They're going to prison! And they have to pay 2.4 million pounds!!
I don't think I would be able to laugh about it, if I was them...

Kinda pointless seeing the site is still up, wouldn't focusing on shutting down the sites as opposed to putting these lads in jail be more beneficial?

Havn't Eircom restricted downloading from illegal sites now? or is still in the pipeline?

doubt it very very much, not for a while anyway. this will be held up with appeal after appeal for years on end.

I think even the possibility of that sort of thing happening would disturb my slumber somewhat ...

just wait and see. they already made a statement that they will appeal.. so theres 1 year waiting right there and then they still have 1 or 2 higher courts that they can appeal to after that.

Well the problem is.. the sites themselves are not really illegal. They don't contain any copyrighted material, just a database of people who do. Peer to Peer is a legitimate file distribution method used by lot of companies for completely legal file distribution.
It probably why the Swede's didnt go after the site itself, it made more sense to go after the owners for aiding copyright infringement (i.e scare anyone else from doing the same)

Even if certain sites do get blocked, they can be up and running with new IP/DNS addresses within a matter of hours. ISP's will always be chasing shadows.

It's a minefield.. If you go after sites successfully for aiding distribution, then are the ISP's (like Eircom) not also doing the same. They provide the network access, and host the sites.

A bit of this article caught my eye..

    "
Digital media law specialist Gregor Pryor at Reed Smith highlighted "the increased and welcome trend of protectionism" in anti-piracy cases from direct infringement on Napster to software provision in the case of Kazaa and Grokster.
"Nonetheless, as the law gets tighter, the music industry must continue to release its grip on digital content and allow compelling, innovative legal music services to grow and flourish by licensing those services on reasonable terms," Smith said."

This is something I totally disagree with. I (for example) as the legal copyright owner of digital content should be the only one who decides how that material is distributed and who can have access to it.

It's very similar the Metallica vs Napster case.. I for one 100% agreed with Metallica's stance against Napster. If they dont want their music made available via digital distribution or via a certain company, then they and only they should have the right to make that decision. Taking away those decisions, because it's easier/cheaper than applying the law is the wrong route to take imo....

    /rant over :p

I hope the music industry gets blown up and we all perish just like these scoundrels who have raped mother earths entertainment industry in the universe for way too long. People have lost their lives over the Pirate bay website. The reason we have global warming is because of these Swedish pirate thugs. The reason the world is in a state of financial recession is because of the Pirate bay thugs. Those basterds are the reason for both world wars and less important issues like the Vietnam War and the Hiroshima nuclear bomb.

Say NO to Pirates, lock em up, that’s where they belong...scum...

Yeah probably ....well you never know...if those crazy Americans put enough pressure on and threaten to never buy anymore Kopparberg off them....
But that would be messed up if they were put in jail.

I personally witnessed a load of pirates rape and iceberg last week myself. I like the underline, but rage of this emotion deserves rainbow font.

Agreed, but then they might remain relevant when the punishment of clawing declines is more fitting for their crimes.

Technology is opening new doors for musicians from jam to clam, the few that 'make it' are totally outnumbered by those without a big label deal but with vast reservoirs of untapped genius at their disposal.

What's needed now is for indie labels to collaborate so that as well as being close to the action they build a flexible global distribution system to eclipse the encumbent titans.

As for artists being nurtured, I agree to an extent. If you buy into the system of a lucky few immersed in oppulence and spoonfed thrice daily then it's goodbye to the alternative of many more being able to earn a living for their family doing what they love.

As things stand I fear the younger generation coming up are so dazzled by reality shows, each fledgling ego a junkie on the promise of instant fame and riches, that a great many of them are being set up for a fall. That lesson can exact a heavy price, easily avoided by spending the time to read Don Quixote or such other pages that reveal the wisdom of the ages.

Bring back conscription, that's what I say. That's how we beat the pirates before. And Napoleon.
