Sorry if this has been asked before

I am upgrading my BT broadband from 3MB to 7MB and was looking to change my newsgroup account as a result.

When on giganews I was getting a download of about 300kb/s with my 3MB line

Astraweb ( http://www.news.astraweb.com/plans.html ) are offering unlimited for $10mth but limit the connection to 1mbit/s.

Does this mean I can download 1MB a sec

Thanks in advance for your replies

No, this means if you can handle 1MB/s - then you can max out their connection.

On 7.6MB with BT, you'll average between 700-800KB/s so your almost at their max.

you are not being upgraded to 7MB/s (Bytes), you are being upgraded to 7Mb/s (bits)

To work out what you should be getting, divide your 7Mb/s by 8.

    So 7,000,000 bits / 8 = 875,000 Bytes or 875KB/s <- this is your maximum download speed

If you're going to be limited to 1Mbit/sec, then upgrading from your current 3Mbit/sec to 7Mbit/sec isn't going to do anything. Your downloads would be in the order of 120kByte/sec with that Astraweb package.

Getting ~300kByte/sec with Giga, on the 3Mbit broadband, is just about maxing out your line, I'd expect about 350kByte/sec on that at a max.

The thing about upgrading to 7M is that some lines may not handle it either. You should check your line stats (in your router config page) and enter them here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php to get an idea of wht your line might handle.
