    Hi folks,

The Girlfriends car has a problem with the engine revving up by itself. If the car is running for over 20mins (enough time to warm up) then the engine will stick at ~2k revs. A light tap on and off of the accelerator will bring the revs down to idle but the problem will occur again at say the next downshift/junction/etc.

Anyone know what the problem is, its annoying and the car is eating fuel as herself is of course oblivious to the problem and lets the car run away in traffic at 2k revs:rolleyes:.

What year is the car? Stuck throttle cable maybe?

Its a '99 car. I don't think its the throttle cable as it always sticks at the same revs and it doesn't happen until the engine has warmed up. I agree that its probably worth checking however.

That'll be your butterfly in the throttle body getting stuck, IIRC not an un-common problem with the throttle body

So you're thinking carbon deposits are jamming it open a bit. Sounds like I have to get some carb cleaner and get onto it. Thanks

I had all sorts of idle problems with my Rover 416 a few years back. I never had peace with it.. You can try resetting the stepper motor, disconnect the battery and reconnect again and let the ecu learn the idle settings all over again. Although before you disconnect the battery make sure you have the immobiliser code or else the car wont start at all! Dont attempt to disconnect battery unless you have the original alarm remote or the code on hand otherwise you will be crusified getting it back again and with Rover gone I dont know who will provide you with the code again...If you still have the alarm/central locking remote control you should be safe to disconnect battery.
